Job Description

BARTENDER
The Cronin & 101 Club | Marshall, Michigan Meat Beer Whiskey Hospitality The Cronin & 101 Club is seeking experienced, creative, and hospitality-driven Bartenders to join our opening team. Bartending experience is required for this position. We are not simply looking for someone who can make drinks. We are looking for craft bartenders and storytellers who understand that an exceptional cocktail should have a reason behind every ingredient, every garnish, every glass—and even its name. At The Cronin & 101 Club, our cocktail program will be an important part of our identity. Our cocktails won't just be ordered. They'll be remembered.
THE ROLE
Our Bartenders will provide polished bar service while helping develop and execute an upscale beverage program centered around quality spirits, whiskey, craft cocktails, local beer, seasonality, and the history of Marshall, Michigan.
Responsibilities include:
Prepare classic and craft cocktails accurately and consistently. Provide knowledgeable, polished, and engaging bar service. Maintain strong knowledge of spirits, particularly whiskey and bourbon. Understand proper cocktail-building techniques, measurements, dilution, temperature, balance, and presentation. Prepare drinks efficiently while maintaining quality during high-volume service. Provide beverage recommendations based on guest preferences. Prepare beverages for both bar guests and restaurant service tickets. Maintain an organized, clean, properly stocked, and guest-ready bar. Follow established recipes and presentation standards exactly. Maintain appropriate inventory awareness and communicate shortages or concerns to Management. Follow responsible alcohol-service requirements and company policies. Accurately handle cash, credit-card transactions, tabs, and POS functions. Support Servers and Server Assistants with beverage knowledge and service. Complete opening, running, and closing responsibilities. Maintain professional appearance and behavior at all times.
COCKTAILS THAT TELL A STORY
This is where our beverage program is different. The Cronin & 101 Club will feature seasonal signature cocktails inspired by the people, places, events, businesses, architecture, and stories that shaped Marshall, Michigan. Our Bartenders will have opportunities to participate in the creative process. We want people who can take a piece of history and ask: How could we tell this story in a glass? That could mean developing a cocktail inspired by a historic Marshall resident, an old business that once occupied our building, a local event, a piece of architecture, the railroad, the early days of downtown Marshall, or a story connected to the Prohibition era. But putting a historical name on an ordinary cocktail isn't enough. The drink itself should help tell the story. The spirit, ingredients, presentation, aroma, garnish, glassware, and name should work together to create something intentional.
SEASONAL COCKTAIL DEVELOPMENT
Our cocktail menu will evolve throughout the year. Bartenders may be asked to contribute ideas for seasonal cocktails and participate in recipe development, testing, tasting, costing, and refinement. A successful signature cocktail must be: Unique. It should feel like something guests came to The Cronin & 101 Club to experience. Balanced. Creativity never replaces proper cocktail construction. Repeatable. A great drink isn't great if only one Bartender can make it correctly. Operationally realistic. A beautiful 12-minute cocktail doesn't work when the bar is three tickets deep. Visually intentional. Presentation should enhance the drink without becoming gimmicky. Profitable. Creativity must exist alongside responsible portioning, recipe costing, and product utilization. Seasonally appropriate. Ingredients and flavor profiles should complement the time of year. Connected to a story. Signature cocktails should have a meaningful connection to Marshall, our building, our concept, or the history we're representing.
YOU SHOULD KNOW YOUR CRAFT
This is an experienced Bartender position. Candidates should already understand the fundamentals of professional bartending, including: Classic cocktail recipes and families. Whiskey and bourbon. Vodka, gin, rum, tequila, mezcal, brandy, and other major spirit categories. Liqueurs, bitters, vermouths, amaros, syrups, juices, and modifiers. Proper measuring and jigger use. Shaking, stirring, building, muddling, straining, and other cocktail techniques. Proper dilution and temperature. Glassware selection. Garnish preparation and presentation. Beer service. Basic wine knowledge. Responsible alcohol service. Bar sanitation and organization. Ticket prioritization and service-bar execution. We can teach you our recipes . We can teach you our history . We can teach you our systems . But applicants should arrive with a strong foundation in professional bartending.
WHISKEY MATTERS HERE
There's a reason WHISKEY is part of Meat Beer Whiskey. Our Bartenders should be comfortable discussing whiskey with guests or excited to develop advanced whiskey knowledge. You should be able to help a guest who says: "I normally drink bourbon, but I want to try something different."
Or:
"I don't know anything about whiskey. Where should I start?" Great bartending isn't about making guests feel intimidated by what you know. It's using what you know to make the guest feel comfortable exploring something new.
KNOW THE STORY BEHIND THE DRINK
If a guest asks why a cocktail has its name, we want our Bartenders to know the answer. Bartenders will receive training on the history incorporated into our concept and will be expected to learn the stories connected to our signature cocktails. You aren't expected to give guests a history lecture. Instead, imagine placing a cocktail in front of someone and being able to say: "There's actually a story behind this one..." That's the experience we're trying to create. History becomes part of the hospitality.
SPEED WITHOUT SACRIFICING CRAFT
Craft cocktails don't give us permission to be slow. Our Bartenders must be capable of producing sophisticated cocktails while managing bar guests, service tickets, conversations, payments, restocking, and multiple priorities. You must know when to engage. You must know when to move. And you must be able to do both without sacrificing the quality of the drink or the experience of the guest. Fast. Accurate. Consistent. Polished.
HOSPITALITY BEHIND THE BAR
Technique matters. Hospitality matters more. We want Bartenders who can read the guest sitting in front of them. Some guests want to talk whiskey. Some want to hear the history behind their cocktail. Some want recommendations. Some want to celebrate. And some simply want a great drink and a quiet evening. Great Bartenders know the difference.
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
You'll be a strong fit if you: Are experienced. You already have professional bartending experience and understand the fundamentals of the craft. Are creative. You enjoy experimenting with flavor, presentation, and cocktail development. Are curious. History, spirits, ingredients, and technique genuinely interest you. Understand consistency. Once a recipe is finalized, every guest deserves the same cocktail. Move with urgency. Craft does not mean slow. Have personality. The bar should feel sophisticated without feeling pretentious. Can tell a story. You can explain a cocktail or whiskey in a way that's interesting and approachable. Take pride in your workspace. Your bar is clean, stocked, organized, and ready before you need it. Understand teamwork. Service-bar tickets matter just as much as the guest sitting directly in front of you.
EXPERIENCE & REQUIREMENTS
Previous professional bartending experience is required. Craft cocktail, whiskey, upscale dining, fine-dining, steakhouse, high-volume bar, or elevated hospitality experience is strongly preferred.
Candidates must also:
Demonstrate working knowledge of classic cocktails and professional bartending techniques. Be comfortable following standardized recipes and measurements. Be willing to participate in ongoing beverage education. Be willing to learn the history behind our concept and signature cocktails. Work evenings, weekends, and holidays according to business needs. Maintain reliable and punctual attendance. Maintain a polished and professional appearance. Meet all applicable requirements for serving alcoholic beverages. Follow responsible alcohol-service standards and company policies. Remain composed and professional during high-volume service.
MORE THAN MAKING DRINKS
At The Cronin & 101 Club, you aren't just behind the bar to pour whiskey and shake cocktails. You're helping build our beverage identity. You're creating experiences. You're introducing guests to spirits they may never have tried. You're helping develop cocktails that exist nowhere else. You're learning the stories of Marshall. And you're finding ways to put those stories into a glass. Because around here, every great drink deserves a great story.
JOIN THE OPENING TEAM
The Cronin & 101 Club combines great food, whiskey, beer, cocktails, history, and hospitality in a sophisticated atmosphere inspired by Marshall's history and the character of the Prohibition era. We're building our beverage program from the ground up, and we're looking for experienced Bartenders who want the opportunity to help shape what it becomes. If you're an experienced Bartender who respects the classics but loves creating something new—and you believe a cocktail can be both a great drink and a great story—we'd like to meet you. Come help us turn Marshall's history into something worth raising a glass to. The Cronin & 101 Club 101 W. Michigan Ave.
