GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK
The Congregate Site Assistant is responsible for assisting with coordinating the daily operation of an assigned senior congregate meal site. The position ensures that meals are received, stored, prepared for service, and distributed appropriately; maintains required food temperatures and sanitation standards; coordinates daily activities and programs for participants; assists volunteers; maintains an orderly and welcoming environment; and completes required records and reports. Work involves regular interaction with senior adults, volunteers, County staff, meal delivery personnel, and the public. The employee must demonstrate patience, compassion, professionalism, reliability, and the ability to work independently while following established Senior Services policies, food-safety requirements, and program procedures. This position is grant-funded and is contingent upon availability and continuation of grant funding. Continuation of employment is subject to the renewal, availability, and/or continuation of grant funds.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Opens and prepares the congregate site for daily activities and meal service.
  • Sets up the dining, program, and kitchen areas as necessary for daily operations.
  • Receives hot meals and verifies that meals meet established temperature and food-safety requirements.
  • Checks, records, and monitors food temperatures upon receipt and prior to serving lunch.
  • Verifies the number of congregate meals received and ensures participants who ordered meals receive the appropriate meal.
  • Maintains and properly uses Cambro containers and other food-service equipment.
  • Sanitizes Meals on Wheels bags and other reusable meal-delivery bags and containers when returned to the site.
  • Packs and prepares Meals on Wheels bags or other meal-service items as assigned.
  • Assists with meal packaging and other kitchen responsibilities when needed.
  • Coordinates and presents scheduled programs and activities for congregate participants.
  • Greets and assists senior participants and promotes a welcoming, respectful, and engaging environment.
  • Assists with volunteer check-in/check-out and provides volunteers with appropriate instructions when designated staff are unavailable.
  • Maintains appropriate records related to attendance, meals, temperatures, activities, contributions, and other program requirements.
  • Reports participant concerns, changes in condition, meal-service issues, safety concerns, or other significant matters to the appropriate staff member.
  • Cleans and sanitizes the dining room, kitchen, food-service areas, equipment, and other assigned areas at the conclusion of daily operations.
  • Removes trash from the kitchen and dining areas.
  • Ensures food and supplies are properly stored and rotated.
  • Completes end-of-day closing procedures, including cleaning and storing the coffee pot; draining and turning off the dishwasher; verifying Cambros are unplugged; and ensuring ovens, gas appliances, fans, and other equipment are turned off or unplugged as appropriate.
  • Assists with other Senior Services programs, meal-service activities, and related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
General knowledge of basic food handling, sanitation, and workplace safety practices; ability to follow written and verbal instructions; ability to accurately count money and maintain basic records; ability to organize daily activities and manage multiple responsibilities; ability to communicate effectively and professionally with senior adults, volunteers, coworkers, and the public; ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment; ability to maintain confidentiality when handling participant information; ability to recognize and report safety, food-service, or participant concerns; and ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. The employee must demonstrate patience, compassion, dependability, professionalism, and a genuine interest in working with senior adults.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Graduation from high school or possession of a GED is preferred. Experience working with senior adults, food service, community programs, recreation, customer service, or a related setting is preferred. An equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to successfully perform the essential functions of the position may be considered.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
The employee must be able to successfully complete any food-safety, sanitation, nutrition-program, or other training required by Caswell County or applicable program requirements. A valid driver's license may be required if the employee is expected to operate a County vehicle or perform duties requiring travel.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & WORK EVIRONMENT
The work requires regular standing, walking, reaching, bending, stooping, and use of the hands to handle food-service supplies, equipment, records, and other materials. The employee must be able to move and handle meal containers, food supplies, trash, tables/chairs, and other materials associated with operation of the congregate site. Work is primarily performed in a senior center, congregate dining area, and kitchen environment and may involve exposure to hot foods and liquids, kitchen appliances, cleaning products, wet surfaces, and temperature variations associated with food handling. The employee must be able to perform the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation.
