POSITION TITLE:

Food Service Employee

REPORTS TO

Food Service Manager and/or Building Administrator

POSITION SUMMARY

The Food Service Employee prepares and serves meals to students in a safe, sanitary, and efficient manner in accordance with district procedures and state and federal requirements. This position supports all aspects of food service operations, including food preparation, serving, dishwashing, sanitation, and cashiering, while maintaining a clean and welcoming cafeteria environment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Prepare and portion food items according to established menus and recipes.

Set up and maintain service lines and serve meals to students and staff in a courteous and efficient manner.

Safely operate kitchen equipment in accordance with training and safety procedures, including but not limited to ovens, warmers, mixers, industrial pots, slicers, and sanitizing equipment.

Wash dishes, utensils, and equipment by hand or using approved sanitizing equipment as required.

Follow all applicable food safety, sanitation, and health department regulations, including USDA and state requirements.

Assist with inventory management by monitoring stock levels, identifying short-dated items, and rotating, receiving, and storing products according to established guidelines.

Accurately count, record, and document meal components and participation data to ensure state and federal compliance.

Learn and apply NSLP meal components and portion sizes to ensure compliant meal service.

Operate the Point of Sale (POS) system accurately to record meal counts, student eligibility, payments, and transactions in accordance with district, state, and federal requirements.

Work cooperatively and professionally with food service staff, school personnel, students and vendors.

Identify and report equipment malfunctions, safety hazards, or supply concerns to the supervisor in a timely manner.

Maintain confidentiality of student meal eligibility, account status, and related information.

Act as a mandatory reporter and immediately report suspected child abuse or neglect in accordance with state law and district procedures.

Utilize district-approved de-escalation strategies and behavior intervention techniques.

Be responsible for assigned keys and ensure their proper use and security.

Attend required trainings, safety meetings, and certification sessions.

Perform other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS
Required:

High school diploma or GED.

Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and established procedures.

Ability to stand for extended periods and lift, carry, or move items weighing up to 70 pounds.

Ability to obtain and maintain a valid Food Handler's Certificate.

Ability to pass required background check, UA screening and fingerprint clearance.

Maintain a valid driver's license.

Preferred:

Previous food service experience in a school or institutional setting.

Familiarity with USDA School Meal Program guidelines and compliance requirements.

Basic computer skills, including use of point-of-sale systems and cash handling.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Fast-paced kitchen and cafeteria environment.

Exposure to heat, cold, steam, cleaning chemicals, and kitchen equipment.

Frequent standing, bending, lifting, and carrying of supplies and equipment.

Regular interaction with students and school staff in a public school setting.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

Work year, wages, hours, and benefits are governed by the applicable classified collective bargaining agreement.

Continued employment is contingent upon successful background and fingerprint clearance and maintenance of required certifications.

Required to maintain a current Food Handler's Certificate as specified by district and state regulations.

Maintain a valid driver's license.
