Assistant to the Head Brewer

Job Description

The Assistant to the Head Brewer supports all aspects of the brewing process to ensure the consistent production of high-quality beer. This role assists with brewing operations, cellar work, packaging, quality control, inventory management, equipment maintenance, and general brewery cleanliness. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, physically capable, and passionate about craft beer and continuous learning. Key Responsibilities Brewing Operations Assist the Head Brewer in wort production, mashing, lautering, boiling, cooling, and fermentation. Follow established recipes, brewing schedules, and standard operating procedures. Prepare brewing ingredients and equipment prior to brew days. Monitor brewing processes and record production data. Cellar Operations Perform tank cleaning and sanitation (CIP). Transfer beer between tanks. Monitor fermentation and conditioning. Harvest and pitch yeast as directed. Assist with dry hopping, carbonation, and filtration (if applicable). Packaging Operate and maintain canning, bottling, or kegging equipment. Clean, fill, and package kegs. Inspect packaged products for quality and consistency. Maintain accurate packaging and inventory records. Quality Assurance Follow all sanitation and food safety procedures. Collect samples for quality testing. Monitor beer appearance, aroma, flavor, carbonation, and stability. Help maintain brewing logs and production records. Equipment & Facility Maintenance Clean and sanitize brewing vessels, hoses, pumps, and packaging equipment. Perform routine preventative maintenance. Report equipment issues promptly. Maintain a clean, organized, and safe brewery environment. Inventory Assist with receiving and organizing raw materials. Monitor ingredient and packaging inventories. Help track supplies and communicate inventory needs. Safety Follow OSHA and brewery safety standards. Properly handle chemicals, pressurized systems, and hot liquids. Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE). Promote a safe working environment. Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent required. Brewing education or previous brewery experience preferred. Strong mechanical aptitude and willingness to learn. Ability to follow detailed instructions and maintain accurate records. Strong organizational and time-management skills. Team-oriented with excellent communication skills. Flexible schedule, including occasional evenings or weekends as production demands require. Physical Requirements Ability to lift and carry up to 55 pounds regularly. Ability to stand, walk, bend, climb ladders, and work in confined spaces. Comfortable working in hot, wet, cold, and noisy environments. Ability to safely move kegs and brewing materials. Preferred Qualifications Previous experience in a production brewery. Knowledge of brewing science and sanitation practices. Forklift certification or willingness to obtain certification. Familiarity with quality assurance and brewery management software.
