This is a competitive Civil Service position which requires the applicant to be on a current Civil Service list for Head Custodian or to be able to complete the required examination.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

This supervisory position is responsible for the efficient and economical cleaning and maintenance of a large school building or number of smaller buildings and related facilities. The work is performed under the general direction of a superior allowing wide leeway for the exercise of independent judgment in keeping buildings and facilities up to approved standards of cleanliness and operation. Immediate supervision is exercised over the work of subordinate personnel. Does related work as required.

EXAMPLES OF WORK

(Illustrative only) Conducts cleaning and maintenance activities; Oversees schedule and assign tasks for cleaners and custodians under their charge; Conducts regular inspections of buildings and grounds to maintain proper cleaning and maintenance procedures; Makes recommendations for improvements in procedures and/or new equipment; Oversees and/or assigns cleaning and maintenance work to subordinate personnel; Checks to ensure that buildings are heated, cleaned, locked and unlocked and ready for all activities; Inspects and exercises control over maintenance work performed by outside contractors; Maintains records and creates reports of supplies used and activities carried out; Assists with cleaning and maintenance activities when necessary; Assess, address, and report building emergencies, vandalism, or break ins to supervisor and/or authorities; Performs other duties as assigned by the Director of Facilities and District Business Administrator

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Thorough knowledge of building cleaning practices, supplies and equipment; good knowledge of the operation and maintenance of a low pressure heating facilities; working knowledge tools; terminology and practices of one or more skilled trades; ability to follow moderately difficult oral and written directions; ability to plan and supervise the work of others; thoroughness; resourcefulness; dependability; good judgment; good physical condition. Terms of Employment 12- month appointment Starting salary is indicated above. Actual salary to be determined based on qualifications and experience. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
