Full Job Description Now Hiring:
Elementary School Custodian Elementary School Custodian Job Summary The Custodian is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, sanitary, and well-organized environment for students, staff, families, and visitors. This position performs routine and detailed custodial duties throughout the school building and grounds while supporting the daily operational needs of an active elementary school environment. The ideal candidate will have experience working in a larger facility or high-traffic environment, such as a school, university, corporate campus, hospital, government facility, or similar organization. The successful candidate must be dependable, attentive to detail, able to work independently, and capable of maintaining consistent cleaning standards across multiple areas of the facility. Essential Responsibilities Clean and sanitize classrooms, offices, restrooms, hallways, common areas, cafeterias, and other assigned spaces. Sweep, mop, vacuum, scrub, and maintain floors and other surfaces. Clean and disinfect high-touch surfaces throughout the school. Empty trash and recycling containers and properly dispose of waste. Clean and restock restrooms with required supplies. Maintain cleanliness of entrances, doors, windows, and other high-visibility areas. Complete routine and deep-cleaning assignments according to established schedules. Assist with cleaning and resetting areas following school events, meetings, programs, and activities. Monitor custodial supplies and notify the appropriate staff when additional materials are needed. Properly use, store, and maintain cleaning equipment, chemicals, and supplies. Identify and report maintenance concerns, safety hazards, damaged equipment, leaks, or other facility issues. Assist with setting up and moving tables, chairs, equipment, and other materials as needed. Support school opening, closing, and building security procedures when assigned. Follow established health, safety, sanitation, and school procedures. Maintain appropriate confidentiality and professionalism while working around students, staff, and families. Perform other custodial and facility-related duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Minimum of two years of professional custodial or janitorial experience, working in a large or high-traffic facility, such as a school, university, college campus, corporate facility, hospital, government building, or comparable environment. Demonstrated experience maintaining multiple rooms, common areas, restrooms, and shared spaces within a larger facility. Knowledge of standard cleaning practices, sanitation procedures, cleaning chemicals, and custodial equipment. Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and established cleaning schedules. Ability to work independently and complete assigned responsibilities with limited supervision. Ability to prioritize tasks and respond appropriately to unexpected cleaning or facility needs. Strong attendance, punctuality, and dependability. Ability to communicate professionally with school administrators, employees, students, families, and visitors Physical Requirements The position requires the ability to: Stand and walk for extended periods. Bend, stoop, kneel, reach, push, and pull as required to perform custodial duties. Lift and carry custodial supplies, equipment, trash, furniture, and other materials associated with the position. Safely operate standard commercial custodial equipment. Work throughout multiple areas of the school building and grounds. Preferred Qualifications Previous custodial experience in an elementary, secondary, or higher education setting. Experience working in facilities with a high daily volume of occupants and visitors. Experience using commercial floor-care equipment and other professional custodial equipment. Knowledge of cleaning and sanitation practices appropriate for environments serving children. Experience supporting facility preparation for events, meetings, and school activities.
