PAID YOUTH DEVELOPMENT INTERNSHIP

$21/hour | 8 Weeks | 16-20 Hours/Week | Potential Pathway to Group Leader You don't need years of experience to make a difference in a young person's life. You need energy. Reliability. A willingness to learn. And the courage to jump in. YMCA Expanded Learning is looking for Group Assistants to join our elementary and middle school afterschool programs for an 8-week paid internship . This is an opportunity to get real, hands-on experience working with young people while learning from experienced youth development professionals. You'll help lead activities, support students, build relationships, solve problems, and experience what it takes to create an afterschool program where kids want to be. And if you're great at it? This internship could be the beginning—not the end. Strong performers may be considered for advancement into a Group Leader position and future opportunities with the

YMCA. WHY THIS INTERNSHIP EXISTS

Everyone has to start somewhere. Maybe you're studying education, psychology, sociology, recreation, child development, social work, or another people-focused field. Maybe you've volunteered, coached, tutored, babysat, worked at a camp, or helped younger siblings. Or maybe you simply know that you're good with young people and want an opportunity to prove yourself. That's what this internship is for. We'll give you the opportunity to learn by doing. You'll work alongside experienced YMCA staff, receive coaching and feedback, and gradually build the skills needed to become a confident youth development professional.

Minimum 4 weekdays per week

Typical Schedule:

Monday-Friday, approximately 1:30 PM-5:30

PM Typical Hours:

16-20 hours per week

Locations:

Richmond, San Pablo, Pinole, El Sobrante, and Oakland Group Assistants are assigned to a geographic region and typically rotate between two elementary or middle school program sites .

THIS IS A HANDS-ON ROLE

This isn't an internship where you sit in the corner and observe. You'll be working directly with students. One afternoon, you might help a student work through a challenging homework assignment. The next, you might organize a basketball game, help facilitate an art project, encourage a student who doesn't want to participate, or help your team transition 20 students from snack to the next activity. Some days will go exactly according to plan. Others won't. That's youth development—and learning how to respond, adapt, communicate, and lead is part of the experience. Working alongside a Group Leader and your program team, you will: Supervise and engage elementary or middle school students Help create a safe, welcoming, inclusive, and fun program environment Support homework, reading, academic activities, and projects Participate in and help facilitate sports, games, arts, STEM, and enrichment activities Build positive relationships with students Encourage students who may be hesitant to participate Reinforce expectations, routines, and positive behavior Support students who need redirection or additional encouragement Assist with attendance and basic program documentation Help set up, organize, and clean program spaces and materials Support transitions, meals, recreation, special events, and family activities Work collaboratively with Group Leaders, Site Coordinators, and other team members Jump in when something needs to get done You will be expected to participate, learn, and improve.

WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE

The strongest Group Assistants aren't necessarily the people who arrive with the most experience. They're the people who show up ready to contribute. We're looking for people who: Are dependable and arrive on time Genuinely enjoy being around children and teenagers Bring positive energy to the program Participate instead of standing on the sidelines Notice what needs to be done and offer to help Communicate respectfully and professionally Can be patient while still holding students accountable Stay composed when things get busy Are willing to be silly, creative, active, and engaged with students Ask questions when they don't know something Receive feedback without becoming defensive Put coaching into practice Adapt when plans change Support their teammates Want to become better at working with young people You don't need to walk through the door as a leader. But we want to see that you're willing to become one.

YOUR 8 WEEKS ARE ABOUT GROWTH

During your internship, we'll be looking for progress. Can you build relationships with students? Can your team count on you? Can you help lead an activity instead of only participating in one? Can you redirect student behavior respectfully? Can you recognize when something needs to be done without waiting for someone to tell you? Can you take feedback today and show improvement tomorrow? Those are the skills that turn assistants into leaders. Throughout the experience, you'll receive training, coaching, feedback, and opportunities to practice what you're learning in a real afterschool environment.

WHERE CAN THIS LEAD?

Group Assistant can be your starting point—not your ceiling. Successful interns who demonstrate strong performance, reliability, initiative, youth engagement skills, and readiness for greater responsibility may be considered for advancement into a Group Leader position when opportunities are available. Additional opportunities may also become available through: School-year afterschool programs Spring Break programs Summer Camp On-call and substitute positions Future YMCA leadership opportunities Promotion or continued employment is not guaranteed. It is earned through your performance, growth, reliability, and readiness for the next level.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

To be considered, applicants must: Be at least 18 years old Have completed 48 college units OR pass the Instructional Aide Exam Be available at least 4 weekdays per week Be able to reliably travel to assigned program sites Successfully complete required DOJ/FBI background clearances Obtain CPR, First Aid, and AED certification within 30 days of hire

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The physical demands described below represent those required to successfully perform the essential functions of the position.
