WHAT IS Y SCHOLARS?
The YMCA Y Scholars Program believes every young person deserves opportunities to discover their strengths, develop their voice, and realize their potential. Our afterschool programs go beyond simply supervising students until they go home. We create spaces where young people can learn, lead, play, create, connect, and belong. Through enrichment, academic support, physical activity, leadership opportunities, and relationship-building, our team helps students build skills and confidence that extend far beyond the school day. And that starts with great Group Leaders.
WHAT YOUR AFTERNOON COULD LOOK LIKE
You're responsible for your own group of approximately 15-20 students, which means you're the person setting the tone for their afternoon. One moment you might be helping students tackle homework. The next, you're leading a team challenge, facilitating an art project, organizing a game outside, helping students work through a disagreement, or getting an entire group excited about trying something new.
You'll:
Lead your group through a structured afternoon of activities, enrichment, homework support, and physical play Build genuine relationships with students so they feel known, valued, and supported Create and facilitate activities that are fun, purposeful, age-appropriate, and engaging Bring the energy needed to get students participating instead of watching from the sidelines Manage group behavior with clear expectations, consistency, patience, and positive reinforcement Encourage youth voice by giving students opportunities to make choices, contribute ideas, and take leadership Track attendance and maintain active supervision throughout the program day Work closely with your Site Coordinator and teammates to keep the program organized, safe, and running well Model the behaviors you expect by showing respect, responsibility, enthusiasm, and follow-through Most importantly, you'll help create an afternoon students are genuinely excited to be part of.
WHO THRIVES IN THIS ROLE?
You don't need to have everything figured out on Day One. We'll train and coach you. But you do need to be ready to show up, participate, learn, and lead. You'll probably thrive here if you: Genuinely enjoy spending time with children or teens Have the confidence to lead a group instead of waiting for someone else to take charge Can be energetic, expressive, playful, and encouraging Bring ideas and aren't afraid to try something new Stay patient when students are having a difficult day Communicate clearly and respectfully with teammates Understand that students depend on you to be reliable and on time Can accept feedback, make adjustments, and keep improving Believe that young people deserve adults who see their potential Want a job where you're doing something meaningful—not just watching the clock Experience working with youth is a plus, but your mindset, dependability, and willingness to grow matter just as much.
WHAT YOU'LL NEED
To qualify for the Group Leader position, you must: Be 18 years of age or older Have completed 48 college units OR pass an Instructional Aide Exam Don't have 48 units? We'll support you with information about taking the exam. Successfully clear required DOJ/FBI background checks Complete CPR, First Aid, and AED certification within 30 days of hire Training is provided at no cost to you.
WHAT YOU'LL GET FROM US
We expect a lot from our Group Leaders because students deserve great programs. We also believe in investing in the people who make those programs possible. As part of our team, you'll receive: $24.00/hour Free YMCA gym membership Hands-on experience in youth development and leadership Ongoing training, coaching, and professional development Opportunities to strengthen your skills in facilitation, behavior management, lesson planning, communication, and team leadership A pathway toward future YMCA leadership opportunities Priority consideration for available spring break, summer, and future school-year positions The opportunity to work alongside people who care deeply about young people and their communities For someone interested in education, teaching, youth development, recreation, social work, psychology, counseling, nonprofit leadership, or community work, this is an opportunity to build meaningful real-world experience while making an impact now.
THIS IS AN ACTIVE JOB
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by a team member to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Sufficient strength, agility and mobility to perform essential functions of position and to supervise program activities Must occasionally lift up to 30 lbs Frequent bending & standing Able to walk for long periods of time Visual ability to clearly monitor activities in both indoor and outdoor settings Mobility to quickly respond to emergencies
YOUR AFTERNOON CAN MEAN MORE.
For you, it might be a five-hour shift. For a student, it could be the afternoon they discover they're good at something they had never tried. The conversation that helps them through a difficult day. The game where they finally feel like part of the group. The project that sparks a new interest. Or simply having another adult who consistently shows up, knows their name, listens to them, and believes in them. That's the opportunity you have as a YMCA Y Scholars Group Leader. Ready to lead? Apply today and help us build afterschool programs where young people learn, lead, create, connect, and thrive.
