Recreation Specialist (Open/Competitive)

Job Description

Under direction of the Parks & Recreation Director, oversees and coordinates the operations and services of assigned community recreation programs including sports, youth, seniors, instructional classes, or recreation programs, events, and activities. Assesses needs, plans, implements, supervises and evaluates programs and program staff. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, abilities and minimum qualifications necessary to perform the essential functions of the position. A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in recreation, physical education, public administration, or a related field preferred. Graduation from high school or a GED is the minimum qualification. Two years of increasingly responsible technical and supervisory experience in recreation programs required. Possession of a valid Michigan motor vehicle operator's license. NOTE:
This role is with the City of Muskegon. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand and use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The employee is frequently required to walk; reach with hands and arms and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee may be requested to lift or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision and peripheral vision. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate and can be loud, work may also be assigned in an outdoor setting.
EVALUATION CONTENT
Oral Exam - 100% The selected candidate must take a post-offer medical examination (including back screen and complete physical) and drug screening test given by a City appointed physician before the first day of employment. An offer of employment is contingent upon the results of the medical examination and drug screening test. Applicants for City employment may be subject to a post-offer criminal background check, depending on the nature and assignment of the position. When such check is conducted, an offer of employment is contingent upon the results of the criminal background check. Appointees must satisfactorily complete a probationary period before the appointment will be considered permanent.
APPLICANT REVIEW PROCEDURE
Any applicant is entitled to a review of any determination or action taken by the City regarding the applicant's employment application. Inquiries should be directed to the Muskegon County Human Resources Department. PURPOSE The purpose of this recruitment is to establish an eligible list from which to fill present and future vacancies in this classification in the City system. For each opening, the Department Head has her/his choice of the candidates who meet the required minimum entrance qualifications.
