Job Summary United Church in Walpole is seeking an experienced Baritone or Tenor Section Leader and a Soprano to join our vibrant and welcoming music ministry beginning September 10, 2026. Our music ministry is an integral part of worship and reflects the rich diversity of our congregation. As an Open and Affirming congregation of the United Church of Christ, we strive to create worship experiences that are spiritually engaging, artistically meaningful, and welcoming to all. Our volunteer choir sings a broad and varied repertoire, including classical choral works, traditional hymns, African American spirituals, jazz, folk, world music, and contemporary sacred music. We are looking for a collaborative, skilled singer who enjoys mentoring volunteer musicians and contributing to a joyful, inclusive, and high-quality musical community. Responsibilities Lead and coordinate the baritone or tenor section during rehearsals and services, ensuring cohesive harmonization. Rehearse with choir members to improve vocal technique, blending, and musical interpretation. Collaborate with the choir director and organist to plan performances that elevate the worship experience. Provide mentorship to choir members, encouraging musical growth and confidence. Assist in tuning vocal parts and maintaining sectional harmony during performances. Support the overall musical vision of the church by contributing ideas for music selection and arrangement. Participate in additional musical events or special services in coordination with the Music Director. Qualifications Proven experience in religious music performance, concert singing, or choral leadership. Strong knowledge of musical liturgy, hymnody, and sacred music genres. Ability to read sheet music fluently and interpret musical scores accurately. Skilled in harmonizing melodies and blending voices within a choir setting. Experience with digital audio workstations (DAWs) for recording or editing is a plus. Knowledge of acoustic treatment principles to optimize sound quality in performance spaces. Experience with musical improvisation or composition enhances versatility as a leader. Theater experience or background in stage presence can contribute to engaging performances.
Schedule Details Season:
September through June Weekly Rehearsal Thursdays, 6:50-8:00 p.m. Section Leaders are strongly encouraged to attend up to two choir rehearsals each month to support the ensemble and prepare for worship. Rehearsals are compensated at $80 each. Worship Services 2-3 Sundays per month 9:00-11:00 a.m. (includes a 20-minute choir rehearsal before worship) Scheduling Flexibility Our ideal schedule includes participation in up to two rehearsals and two to three worship services each month. We understand that professional musicians often balance church work with performing, teaching, and other musical opportunities.
