Historical Interpreter II - Henricus Historical Park

Job Description

Bachelor's degree in History, Museum Studies, American Studies or Education; two years of experience as an interpreter or educator in a museum or historic site or teaching experience; specialized period skill required; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Academic and working knowledge of early Virginia history including specialization in 16th/17th century English and Native Powhatan agriculture; principles and methodology of living history. Significant knowledge of 18 th and 19 th Century Chesterfield County and Virginia history. Ability to work in adverse weather while wearing accurately fitted historical clothing; good communication skills both orally and in writing; ability to interact with all ages, cultures and backgrounds. Thorough knowledge of program related historical material. Current valid driver's license and good driving record required. Based on the Virginia DMV point system, records must not reflect a total of six or more demerit points within the twenty-four months preceding the anticipated hire date, or one major violation of six demerit points within the preceding thirty-six months. Out-of-state driving records must be obtained by applicant and presented at time of interview. Records must reflect at least three years of history and be dated within thirty days of interview date. Pre-employment drug testing, FBI criminal background check and education/degree verification required. Serve as education coordinator, planning, developing, scheduling and implementing historical interpretive and educational programs at Henricus Historical Park and other local historic sites such as Midlothian Mines, Castlewood, Eppington, Point of Rocks, etc. Duties include presentation of living history interpretive/education programs to visitors, school groups and other groups; assist with maintaining and constructing interpretive wares; perform routine inspections and maintenance of site grounds, facilities and collections; assist with caretaking of some period breed animals such as goats & chickens; conduct historical research with assistance in program and special events content; assist in training other employees/volunteers.
