Betty Hardwick Center is currently looking to hire a Consumer Benefits Specialist in Abilene. : This position assists consumers in applying for federal and/or state benefits by adhering to complicated policies and procedures. This position completes disability reviews and answers inquiries regarding federal and/or state benefits; interviews, verifies and documents case data, filing appeals in a timely manner, and provides required information/documentation to both internal and external entities when required. This position acts as a representative for the consumers to external agencies such as the Social Security Administrations, and the Division for Disability Determination Services (DDS). This position requires timely intervention and frequent face to face contact with consumers, families and outside agencies. This position requires the ability to quickly identify problems/areas of need, to act professionally in stressful situations, to interpret and thoroughly complete federal and/or state forms and documentation. This position will ensure that consumer's rights are respected and observed at all times. Periodic travel related to work assignments and training is required. This position will be responsible for applying for SSI, SSDI, QMB, SLMB, & Medicaid. This position requires education and knowledge in the Medicare Prescription Drug Coverage/Part D plan. This position will assist all eligible clients to access their individualized prescription drug plan. This position works with other Betty Hardwick Center departments and outside agencies in a respectful, professional and knowledgeable manner.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • This position requires a high school diploma and six months experience in the field of consumer benefits.
  • Some college may be substituted for experience. A four-year degree is preferred.
  • In lieu of both of theses, extensive experience with the consumers and center procedures will be acceptable.
  • Skills using word processing and spreadsheets software programs required.
  • Skills using data base programs required.
  • Position requires knowledge of general office procedures and using general office equipment that will include copiers, fax machines, and scanners.
  • Must possess a current Texas driver's license, is an insurable driver and qualify for Center coverage.
  • This position works under minimal supervision with latitude for use of initiative and independent judgment.
Consumer Benefits Specialists earn $14.07 - $15.28 per hour (DOE); will be eligible for a one and two-year step increase, depending on satisfactory performance. This is a full-time position with standard work hours of Monday through Friday, 8:00am - 5:00pm.
