Human Resources Assistant

Job Description

Job Summary:
Provides clerical and administrative support for payroll and personnel functions within the department. Responsibilities include processing and maintaining payroll and benefit records, updating confidential employee files, preparing reports, assisting employees with payroll and benefit inquiries, and ensuring compliance with county policies and union agreements. The role also involves handling financial transactions, maintaining employment records throughout the employee lifecycle, supporting special projects, and providing general front-desk assistance to the public and county staff. Qualifications Education & Experience High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate degree in Business Administration, Accounting, Human Resources, or related field preferred 2-3 years of experience in payroll, human resources, accounting, or administrative support Experience working in a government or union environment preferred Knowledge & Skills Working knowledge of payroll processing and benefit accrual systems Familiarity with personnel recordkeeping and employee lifecycle documentation Understanding of union agreements and ability to apply contractual guidelines Strong knowledge of basic accounting principles and financial transaction processing Proficiency in Microsoft Office (especially Excel and Word) Experience with payroll or HRIS systems preferred Abilities Ability to maintain strict confidentiality of personnel and payroll information High level of accuracy and attention to detail Strong organizational and recordkeeping skills Ability to prepare reports and interpret data Effective written and verbal communication skills Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines Professional customer service skills when assisting employees and the public Other Requirements Ability to work independently while also collaborating with department staff Ability to attend meetings or trainings as required
