About the Role The HR Manager leads the day-to-day human resources function for Virtuous Boss, ensuring effective workforce practices, employee support, and legal compliance. This position oversees workforce planning, recruitment, HR operations, employee relations, performance management, payroll, compensation and benefits, training, policies, BambooHR administration, and QuickBooks Payroll to support employee success and organizational growth. HR Leadership & Workforce Responsibilities Develop and implement HR priorities, workforce plans, policies, systems, and service standards aligned with organizational goals and growth. Lead organization-wide recruitment and talent acquisition processes, including workforce planning, job postings, candidate screening, interview coordination, hiring recommendations, pre-employment requirements, onboarding, and staffing-readiness tracking. Partner with department leaders to assess staffing needs, establish hiring priorities, evaluate candidates, and make hiring recommendations in accordance with approved staffing plans and budgets. Lead, coach, and coordinate assigned HR staff, consultants, payroll and benefits providers, employment counsel, and other HR partners. Employee/Contractor Relations, Performance & Compliance Responsibilities Maintain legally compliant, practical HR policies and procedures and monitor federal, Maryland, local, contractual, and school-system employment requirements. Manage employee-relations matters, workplace concerns, investigations, corrective actions, performance concerns, and separations, escalating significant legal, financial, reputational, or organizational risks to the Head of Operations and/or executive leadership as appropriate. Oversee performance-management processes, including goals, evaluations, coaching, improvement plans, manager guidance, and follow-up accountability. Coordinate employee and independent contractor workforce administration, including appropriate documentation, agreements, onboarding requirements, personnel records, status tracking, and separation processes, in collaboration with Operations, Finance, and legal counsel as appropriate. Maintain accurate, confidential, and compliant personnel records and HR documentation, ensuring required employment, payroll, background screening, school-system clearance, performance, and personnel documents are complete and current. Employee Relations, Performance & Compliance Responsibilities Manage and process payroll through QuickBooks Payroll, including reviewing and verifying timekeeping, compensation changes, deductions, reimbursements, and other payroll-related information; ensure accurate and timely payroll processing; maintain payroll records; and resolve payroll discrepancies in coordination with Finance as needed. Oversee attendance, leave, accommodation, workplace-injury, and return-to-work processes while ensuring timely documentation and communication. Develop and implement employee onboarding, engagement, recognition, retention, training, and workplace-culture initiatives that strengthen the employee experience and support organizational values and performance expectations. Monitor HR metrics, audits, complaints, turnover, vacancies, compliance deadlines, and workforce risks; provide clear recommendations and reports to leadership. Compensation Compensation for this position will be determined based on experience, qualifications, scope of responsibility, and the approved employment structure. Employees are paid on a semi-monthly basis, subject to applicable taxes and withholdings. Qualifications At least five years of progressive human-resources experience, including HR operations, employee relations, compliance, and manager support, preferred. At least two years of HR leadership, supervisory, or functional-ownership experience in a small or growing organization preferred. Strong working knowledge of federal, Maryland, and local employment requirements, investigations, performance management, leave, and personnel documentation. Proficiency with BambooHR or a comparable HRIS, QuickBooks Payroll or a comparable payroll platform, timekeeping systems, benefits coordination, workforce reporting, Google Workspace, and digital records management. Excellent judgment, confidentiality, leadership, communication, conflict resolution, organization, change management, and follow-through. A bachelor's degree in human resources, business, or a related field and SHRM-CP/SCP, PHR/SPHR, or comparable certification are preferred.
