Location:
Brenham, Texas, with regular travel to company operating locations Employment type:
Full-time Pay:
$90,000.00 - $110,000.00 based on experience Position overview Brannon Industrial Group is seeking an experienced, hands-on Human Resources Director to establish and lead the company's first dedicated HR function, supporting approximately 220 employees. This newly created position is an opportunity to build practical systems, strengthen our managers, support employees, and help prepare the organization for continued growth. We are looking for someone who can operate independently, identify priorities, and turn recommendations into results. The right person will be equally comfortable working with executive leadership, supporting frontline supervisors, speaking with employees at operating locations, and completing the detailed work necessary to run HR. This is initially a standalone HR leadership position—not a role supported by an established HR department. Success will require sound judgment, organization, initiative, and a willingness to handle both day-to-day needs and longer-term improvements. Key responsibilities Establish the HR function. Assess current practices and build a prioritized plan for improvement. Establish practical policies, procedures, employee records, reporting tools, and a calendar of required activities. Evaluate existing technology and recommend improvements that fit the company's needs and resources. Lead recruiting and onboarding. Partner with managers to understand staffing needs and improve recruiting, interviewing, candidate selection, and offer processes. Develop job descriptions and consistent hiring documentation. Establish onboarding that connects administrative requirements, job expectations, operational training, and early employee follow-up. Support employee relations and manager accountability. Serve as an accessible resource for employees and managers. Address workplace concerns promptly and fairly, conduct or coordinate investigations, and maintain appropriate documentation and confidentiality. Coach managers on attendance, performance, feedback, discipline, and separation decisions. Coordinate employment compliance, policies, and records. Maintain an organized approach to employment requirements, employee documentation, leave administration, accommodations, and required reporting. Work with external counsel and other advisers when specialized guidance is needed. Develop and maintain an employee handbook and communicate approved policies clearly. Manage benefits coordination and compensation processes. Coordinate benefits enrollment, employee questions, and vendor communication. Work with finance and payroll on accurate employee information, approved compensation changes, deductions, and related processes. Help leadership establish consistent job levels, pay ranges, promotion practices, and compensation reviews. Develop managers and improve retention. Provide practical supervisor training. Establish regular employee check-ins, exit feedback, and methods for identifying recurring workforce issues. Recommend improvements to communication, recognition, career development, and employee retention. Support business planning and growth. Provide leadership with useful information on staffing, turnover, recruiting, and workforce needs. Partner with operations and safety leaders while maintaining clear responsibilities. Support workforce planning and the employee-related aspects of acquisitions and integration as needed. Required qualifications Approximately seven or more years of progressively responsible HR experience, including substantial independent ownership of HR activities. Demonstrated experience building or significantly improving HR processes in a growing organization. Experience supporting hourly and salaried employees in an operational, industrial, field-service, or comparable environment. Strong working knowledge of recruiting, employee relations, benefits administration, leave management, employment practices, and employee records. Demonstrated ability to handle sensitive matters, exercise sound judgment, coach managers, and follow through on competing priorities. Ability to work on-site, visit operating locations, and communicate effectively with employees across different roles and schedules. Preferred qualifications Experience in waste and recycling, transportation, manufacturing, construction, distribution, or a related industry; experience supporting multiple locations; and prior responsibility for a standalone or lean HR function. A degree in human resources, business, or a related field—or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience—is preferred. Professional HR certification is also preferred. Experience implementing HR systems, supporting acquisitions, or communicating effectively in Spanish would be beneficial where relevant to the company's needs. What success looks like Within the first 90 days, the successful candidate will have developed a clear understanding of the business, established relationships across the organization, identified priority gaps, and begun implementing essential HR processes. Over the first year, success will include more consistent hiring and onboarding, organized employee records, stronger supervisor practices, dependable benefits and employment administration, useful workforce reporting, and measurable progress on agreed recruiting and retention priorities. Who will thrive in this role You enjoy building something that does not yet exist. You are comfortable taking ownership without an established playbook, while recognizing when to seek input or specialist advice. You can support employees and hold people accountable. You communicate directly and respectfully, make practical recommendations, and remain willing to do the detailed work yourself.
