About Ember HR Ember HR provides practical, responsive HR support to small businesses that need experienced guidance without a full-time internal HR department. Our work is grounded in partnership and collaboration. We take the time to understand each client's business, culture, and workforce so we can provide HR solutions that meet their unique needs. We are intentionally a part-time company . Our team members work no more than 30 hours per week while delivering high-quality, dependable support to our clients. About the Role Ember HR is seeking an experienced, hands-on HR Business Partner to serve as an embedded fractional HR resource for multiple small-business clients. This is not a narrowly focused or advisory-only position. The person in this role must be comfortable independently managing the full range of day-to-day HR responsibilities—from recruiting and payroll to benefits administration and complex employee relations matters. Our clients have different industries, cultures, systems, and priorities. The ideal candidate processes information quickly, shifts comfortably between competing needs, exercises sound judgment, and knows when to act independently and when to collaborate or escalate. Key Responsibilities Serve as a trusted, embedded HR partner to assigned small-business clients. Develop a strong understanding of each client's operations, culture, workforce, and business needs. Provide practical guidance to owners, managers, and employees on a wide range of HR matters. Manage full-cycle recruiting, including job postings, candidate screening, interviewing, offers, and onboarding. Process or oversee payroll accurately and on schedule, including employee changes, deductions, reporting, and issue resolution. Administer employee benefit programs, including enrollments, qualifying life events, employee questions, vendor coordination, and open enrollment. Handle employee relations matters with professionalism, discretion, consistency, and sound judgment. Coach managers through performance concerns, corrective action, workplace conflict, and employee communication. Support workplace investigations and prepare clear, objective documentation. Maintain personnel records, HR systems, policies, and required employment documentation. Assist clients with employee handbooks, job descriptions, compensation practices, compliance requirements, and HR process improvements. Track deadlines and follow through on multiple priorities across several client accounts. Identify risks, recommend practical solutions, and communicate complex HR matters in a clear and approachable way. Build collaborative relationships while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries and confidentiality. What We're Looking For Broad, hands-on experience across multiple HR functions, including recruiting, payroll, benefits administration, employee relations, performance management, and compliance. Prior HR Business Partner, HR Manager, HR Generalist, fractional HR, or HR consulting experience. Demonstrated ability to manage sensitive and complex employee matters independently. Strong working knowledge of federal and state employment practices and the ability to research unfamiliar requirements. Excellent judgment, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. Ability to process information quickly and move work forward without sacrificing accuracy or care. Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage changing priorities for multiple clients. Clear, professional, and thoughtful written and verbal communication. High level of discretion and respect for confidential information. Comfort working both independently and as part of a collaborative team. Proficiency with payroll, benefits, applicant-tracking, HRIS, and general business technology. Bachelor's degree in human resources, business, or a related field preferred. SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, PHR, or SPHR certification is a plus. You May Be a Great Fit If You Enjoy variety and feel energized by a dynamic work environment. Can move easily from a recruiting conversation to a payroll question and then to an employee relations issue. Are responsive, resourceful, and comfortable taking ownership. Balance empathy with accountability. Provide clear recommendations instead of simply identifying problems. Understand that effective HR support must be both people-centered and operationally practical. Value partnership, collaboration, and long-term client relationships. Want meaningful HR work without a traditional full-time schedule. Schedule and Work Arrangement This is a part-time position requiring no more than 30 hours per week. The role operates in a hybrid environment and may include virtual work, in-person team collaboration, and on-site client support based on business needs. Ember HR may consider either a part-time employment arrangement or an independent contractor engagement, depending on the candidate's qualifications, availability, scope of services, and applicable classification requirements.
