Job Description

Job Overview This is a hybrid position that supports both the daily care of animals and the front desk operations of Thomasville Humane. This role typically begins the day assisting with animal care responsibilities, including cleaning, feeding, enrichment, monitoring, and general shelter support, before transitioning to the front desk during public hours. From approximately 1:00-6:00 PM, this position serves as a primary point of contact for visitors, callers, adopters, fosters, and community members. The ideal candidate is compassionate, dependable, organized, comfortable working hands-on with animals, and able to provide professional and empathetic customer service in a fast-paced shelter environment. Duties Animal Care & Shelter Support Provide daily care and maintenance for dogs and cats, ensuring their physical and emotional needs are met Perform cleaning and sanitation duties to maintain a clean and safe environment Feed, water, exercise, and provide enrichment to animals as assigned Observe and report changes in animal behavior or health Follow shelter protocols for animal handling, care, sanitation, and safety Maintain accurate animal care and behavior records as needed Assist with animal restraint, transport, and movement throughout the facility Perform general custodial duties, including sweeping and mopping Assist with volunteers and other animal care tasks as assigned Customer Service & Front Desk Support Serve as a primary point of contact by answering incoming phone calls, greeting visitors, and responding to general inquiries Provide accurate information about services, programs, policies, and adoption procedures Assist adopters and community members with paperwork and transactions Coordinate foster pick-ups, drop-offs, and communication as needed Assist with scheduling spay/neuter appointments and coordinating transport Manage general messages, phone calls, and staff follow-ups Maintain a welcoming, organized, and calm lobby/front desk environment De-escalate difficult or emotionally charged interactions with professionalism and empathy Physical & Work Environment Requirements Ability to lift up to 50 pounds Ability to walk, stand, bend, stretch, and reach for extended periods Ability to safely handle animals of various sizes, breeds, temperaments, and health conditions Ability to operate basic animal handling and cleaning equipment Willingness to work in an animal shelter environment that may include animal waste, odors, loud noise, chemicals, outdoor weather conditions, and exposure to sick, frightened, or injured animals Ability to work a flexible schedule, including weekends and holidays as needed Required Qualifications High school diploma or GED Strong customer service and communication skills Ability to remain calm, professional, and compassionate in stressful or emotionally charged situations Ability to safely work with animals of varying sizes, breeds, and temperaments Basic computer skills and willingness to learn shelter software systems Strong organizational skills and attention to detail Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team Reliable attendance and punctuality Willingness to work weekends, holidays, and flexible hours as needed Preferred Qualifications Previous experience in animal care, handling, husbandry, customer service, front desk, or administrative work Familiarity with animal behavior, health, or shelter operations Experience working in a nonprofit, animal welfare, or public-facing environment Bilingual skills are a plus Expected hours: 40.0 per week
