The Helen O. Krause Animal Foundation, Inc. (HOKAFI) is a non-profit, no-kill animal shelter for abandoned, abused and stray dogs and cats located in Dillsburg, Pennsylvania. The shelter is run primarily by a dedicated corps of volunteers and governed by a volunteer Board of Directors. The Foundation depends entirely on the private sector for funding through donations, membership dues, grants and fundraising activities. The shelter, founded by the late Helen Opperman Krause, sits on approximately two acres of landscaped grounds in a rural community and consists of a state-of-the-art main cat shelter built in 1999, a remodeled cat shelter annex and a dog kennel. At any given time, this complex is home to as many as 100 cats and kittens and 10 dogs.

Job Overview:

The Animal Care Lead plays the principal role in ensuring the well-being of all feline and canine residents at the Helen Krause Animal Foundation (HOKAFI). This position works collaboratively with the Shelter Manager, Canine Specialist, Kennel Technicians, volunteers, and others to ensure that the overall care of all residents meets the principles and objectives of the Helen O. Krause Animal Foundation, Inc., under the policies set by the Board of Directors. The Animal Care Lead is responsible for ensuring that all residents are evaluated regularly for any medical and/or behavioral concerns, and that appropriate follow-up action plans, including lab testing, new medication orders and appointments are appropriately documented and executed. This position will also manage routine animal care which includes but is not limited to in-take evaluations, medicating, animal hygiene, nail clipping, special feedings and other general care activities. The Animal Care Lead reports to the HOKAFI Board President.

Duties:

1. Ensure proper preparation, documentation and follow-through on all resident feline and canine medical details / action plans.

This includes:

• Review volunteer and staff medical logs daily, ensuring that critical issues and trends/patterns of concern are documented and followed-up on.
• Prepare for monthly on-site visiting veterinary visits. This includes but is not limited to finalizing which animals need to be examined/re-examined; ensuring medical charts are appropriately updated ahead of visits; ensuring staff and volunteers receive appropriate communication as needed about visit requirements
• Lead the visiting veterinarian visits on monthly exam days, ensuring completion of exam notes that include lab orders, medication orders and other charting updates. Assist the Shelter Manager as needed with animal handling.
• Post-exam day, ensure animal charts are updated to reflect visit details, as well as document and track action plans, following through to ensure lab orders, medication orders and follow-up care requirements are executed.

2. Ensure appropriate animal care and handling, maintaining the highest standards for all animals entrusted to the shelter.

This includes:

• Support the intake of new HOKAFI residents, which includes checking animals for injuries, spay/neuter, external parasites, tattoos, microchips. Ensure incoming feline residents are tested for FIV & FeLV and that cage cards accurately reflect handling instructions and any medical needs.
• Support the regular grooming process for residents, which will include brushing/combing; washing/bathing; ear-cleaning; nail-clipping and overall general care.
• Ensure that animals on special feeding/medicating schedules that are outside of standard timeframes for these activities receive the care required.
• Transport animals and/or coordinate the transport of animals with volunteer support, in need of medical care (scheduled and emergency) to/from veterinary offices and hospitals, attending visit and ensuring communication to staff and volunteers as appropriate, on all post-visit orders. 3. Manage HOKAFI's medicator team:
• Ensure that animal medical charts are updated, and new charting cards prepared monthly as needed. Replenish prescription medications stored in animal rooms monthly.
• Ensure new medicators are properly trained on medicating procedures and processes.
• Communicate with the medical team regularly about changes to the medication schedule resulting from visiting vet, sick pet or other vet evaluations to ensure that updates are applied as soon as practical.
• Manage education opportunities, which may include training new medicator team members, as well as teaching methods for administering certain treatments/medications.

Develop relationships within the animal rescue community to leverage support and best practices where appropriate. 4. Manage Supplies, Inventory & Billing 5.

Perform the following administrative duties:

• Act as the head of the Foundation's Medical Committee as well as the head of the Cat/Dog Euthanasia Committee. Incumbent may also participate as a member of the Cat/Dog Surrender Committees.
• Maintain records in accordance with operational procedures and work within operating costs/budget.
• Prepare a monthly report for the Board of Directors in advance of monthly meetings, recapping the previous month's medical activity.

Requirements:

High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required Veterinary training and/or other animal medical-related training or experience is preferred At least 3-5 years of animal handling experience Skills and Abilities Possesses a strong passion for HOKAFI's mission and is interested in both supporting it as well as furthering it. Working Conditions ~20-30 hour work week Some evening, weekend and holiday shifts may be required Comfortable with regular exposure to animal odors, diseases, possible contagious conditions, bites, scratches, animal waste, and moderate noise levels. Must be able to stand, walk, sit, talk and hear, stoop, bend, squat, kneel, grasp, grip, put fingers together firmly and reach above and below shoulder level and lift, push or pull 50 pounds for situations of moving and lifting materials or supplies, repetitively use hands to operate computers. Must be able to physically handle all canine breeds, sizes and temperaments as part of the position.
