This position works closely with veterinarians, animal care staff, and management to promote animal welfare and maintain a safe, sanitary shelter environment. The ideal candidate is technically skilled, emotionally resilient, detail-oriented, and committed to treating every animal with dignity and compassion. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Perform daily health checks, triage, and monitoring of shelter animals. Administer medications, vaccinations, fluids, and other treatments as authorized. Collect and prepare laboratory samples, including blood, fecal, urine, and diagnostic swabs. Maintain accurate medical records, treatment plans, medication logs, and controlled-substance records. Identify signs of pain, illness, injury, behavioral distress, and infectious disease, and promptly report concerns. Assist with humane animal handling, restraint, enrichment, and stress-reduction practices. Maintain clean, organized, and properly stocked treatment and euthanasia areas. Perform or assist with humane euthanasia procedures in accordance with veterinary direction, organizational policy, applicable laws, and recognized professional standards. Confirm animal identification and verify euthanasia authorization before each procedure. Prepare animals, equipment, medications, records, and the procedure area. Use calm, compassionate handling techniques to minimize fear, stress, and discomfort. Complete all required euthanasia, controlled-substance, and inventory documentation. Maintain confidentiality and professionalism when discussing euthanasia decisions with staff, volunteers, owners, or members of the public. Required Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent. Veterinary assistant, veterinary technician, animal science, or related training preferred. Experience handling dogs, cats, and other domestic or shelter animals. Experience administering medications and providing basic animal nursing care. Demonstrated ability to recognize common signs of illness, injury, pain, and distress. Ability to safely and compassionately handle animals of varying sizes, temperaments, and medical conditions. Ability to perform euthanasia or willingness to complete required training, depending on organizational policy and local regulations. Ability to maintain accurate records and follow detailed medical and controlled-substance protocols. Ability to work effectively in emotionally challenging situations. Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds and stand, bend, kneel, and walk for extended periods. Valid driver's license may be required. Preferred Qualifications Shelter medicine or community medicine experience. Euthanasia certification or documented experience with humane euthanasia procedures. Fear Free, low-stress handling, animal behavior, or shelter-medicine training. Physical Requirements The employee must be able to: Safely restrain and handle animals. Lift and carry animals, supplies, and equipment weighing up to 50#. Stand, walk, bend, kneel, squat, and reach for extended periods. Perform fine-motor tasks such as drawing medication, handling instruments, and maintaining records. Work safely in a potentially stressful and emotionally demanding environment.
