The Veterinary Assistant/Kennel Attendant is responsible for assisting veterinarians and technicians with patient care, maintaining the cleanliness and organization of the hospital, and ensuring the proper care of all hospitalized and boarding animals. This role involves hands-on animal care, client communication, and hospital maintenance to uphold the highest standards of veterinary medicine.
Key Responsibilities:
Maintain cleanliness and sanitation of all cages, kennels, runs, wards, exam rooms, and related areas per hospital standards. Walk hospitalized and boarded dogs several times daily for exercise and elimination. Observe and report any changes in animal appearance, behavior, or condition. Administer oral medications as prescribed and record observations accurately. Assist veterinarians and technicians with patient restraint, exams, and medical procedures. Provide proper feeding and fresh water for all hospitalized and boarded animals. Perform grooming duties such as bathing, nail trimming, ear cleaning, and anal gland expression. Assist with surgical preparation, including anesthesia setup, animal positioning, and instrument preparation. Assist in radiology by properly positioning animals for X-rays. Conduct and assist in basic laboratory procedures, such as fecal exams and heartworm tests. Ensure all animals are properly identified and that their personal belongings (toys, blankets, leashes) are stored correctly. Maintain proper containment and transport of animals to ensure safety within and outside the clinic (double leash for dogs outside, single leash inside, cats properly kenneled at all times). Assist front desk staff with patient records, scanning documents, and client communication as needed. Release animals to owners, ensuring they are clean and properly groomed. Monitor and stock exam rooms, treatment areas, and hospital supplies. Supervise kennel ward to ensure hospital cleanliness and hygiene standards. Dispose of waste materials properly and maintain a clean hospital environment. Perform general hospital cleaning, including laundry, trash removal, and disinfecting surfaces. Patrol hospital grounds daily to maintain cleanliness and safety. Complete assigned daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance tasks as outlined.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to lift, carry, and handle animals of various sizes and weights. Walking and standing for extended periods. Strength and agility to restrain and handle active or stronger animals.
Working Conditions:
Exposure to unpleasant odors and loud noises. Potential exposure to bites, scratches, and animal waste. Possible exposure to contagious diseases, radiation, and anesthetic gases.

Adhere to hospital policies regarding uniforms, grooming, and professional behavior. Maintain a positive, courteous, and professional demeanor with clients and staff. Arrive on time and be ready to work at the start of each shift. Follow protocols for reporting lateness or absences. Demonstrate initiative by assisting in other areas during downtime and filling in for absent team members. Prioritize tasks effectively and manage time efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
