The ideal candidate will have a passion for animal care and possess the necessary skills to provide high-quality support in a laboratory or veterinary setting.
Responsibilities:
Be responsible for all activities required for the proper care and maintenance of animals, including routine animal husbandry, while maintaining the quality and health of research animals. Provide appropriate food and water to animals following SOPs and approved protocols. Sanitize and decontaminate all areas of the animal facility, perform daily water bottle and cage checks, cage changing, and/or cage cleaning as required in accordance with applicable SOPs and safety procedures. Follow the manufacturer's instructions in operating cage wash and facility equipment. Review and comply with all SOP and quality assurance standards in accordance with established guidelines. Record animal health concerns per SOP and report any abnormal conditions of the animal rooms, facility, or immediate vicinity to the Veterinarian and/or supervisor. Receive, examine, transfer, identify and properly house incoming shipments in accordance with SOPs. Maintain inventories of animal husbandry supplies including: food, bedding and caging. Dispose of waste and animal carcasses following appropriate SOPs. Ensure the integrity of equipment used and follow all procedures necessary to maintain animal housing areas, and lab equipment/materials, including entry of personnel and equipment into the facility, room, or other controlled areas. Transports equipment and supplies following established foot patterns and room order. Ensure the use of supplies in accordance with safety guidelines and procedures. Operate equipment and use supplies in accordance with safety guidelines. Maintain and stock all animal holding, necropsy, and procedure rooms. Perform euthanasia of animals, and other special diagnostic tests, as directed. Provide support to Laboratory Animal Technicians and Veterinarians in completing husbandry duties as needed. Performs other duties as assigned.
Education/Requirements:
High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required Minimum of two-years related animal care and handling experience required. One year of rodent husbandry experience is preferred. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education and experience listed above. AALAS certification at the Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician level (ALAT) is preferred but not required.
