Partner Veterinarian About the Position Wanderers' Rest Humane Association is seeking a compassionate, experienced, and motivated Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT) to join our team and take an important role in the medical care of the animals entrusted to our organization. The LVT will be responsible for providing high-quality daily medical care to shelter dogs and cats, working closely with our partner veterinarian and Executive Director. This position will help ensure that medical protocols are consistently followed, records are accurately maintained, animals are appropriately monitored and treated, and the shelter maintains a high standard of veterinary care. Key Responsibilities Conduct daily health assessments and monitor animals for changes in condition. Administer medications, vaccinations, treatments, fluids, and other veterinary-directed care. Provide wound care, bandage changes, supportive care, and routine nursing care. Assist with examinations, diagnostics, procedures, surgeries, and veterinary treatments. Assist with spay/neuter procedures and other surgical services. Maintain accurate and timely medical records for every animal. Collect and process diagnostic samples as directed. Recognize medical concerns and promptly communicate them to the partner veterinarian and Executive Director. Implement approved veterinary medical protocols and treatment plans. Assist with infectious disease prevention, quarantine, isolation, and population health. Monitor appetite, hydration, weight, elimination, behavior, and overall condition. Maintain appropriate medication and medical supply inventory. Maintain a clean, organized, and properly equipped treatment and medical area. Assist with staff training related to medications, treatments, handling, disease prevention, and medical protocols. Work closely with Animal Care staff to ensure continuity of care. Support Fear Free and low-stress handling practices. Support appropriate enrichment, exercise, nutrition, and socialization. Maintain documentation required for shelter operations and Article 26-C compliance. Participate in continuing education and ongoing improvement of shelter medical practices. Provide emergency and first-aid care and coordinate veterinary intervention when necessary. QualificationsRequired Current New York State Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT) license in good standing. Graduate of an accredited veterinary technology program or equivalent qualification recognized by New York State. Strong knowledge of small-animal medicine and veterinary nursing. Excellent animal handling and restraint skills. Ability to work confidently with both dogs and cats. Strong organizational and recordkeeping skills. Ability to work independently while being an effective team member. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to work in a fast-paced shelter environment. Preferred Previous animal shelter or shelter-medicine experience. Experience with high-volume spay/neuter. Experience with anesthesia monitoring and surgical recovery. Fear Free or low-stress handling experience. Experience with infectious disease control and population medicine. Experience working with medically compromised or cruelty/neglect cases.
