As a relief technician, the shifts are picked up or scheduled when permanent staff is in need of coverage for time off (both scheduled and unscheduled) or staff shortages. It is expected the individual be able to learn on the fly and be confident to self-drive the flow of emergency cases with little to no training of skill. Applicants must be enthusiastic and team-oriented, interested in personal growth and development in ER medicine. 3 years minimum experience as a veterinary technician in Emergency medicine required to ensure skill level is present. Technician duties include but are not limited to:
  • Nursing care: Monitoring and treatments for hospitalized patients including IVF, medication administration, daily medical math calculations, medical documentation, etc.
  • IV catheter placement, management and venous blood draws
  • In house diagnostics: IDEXX Lab machines, fecal analysis, urinalysis, blood pressure, digital radiography, assist with ultrasonography
  • Technicians perform anesthesia induction, surgical prep, and monitoring of anesthetized patients with multi-parameter monitors
  • Basic animal husbandry
  • Restraint of fractious/aggressive animals
  • Client communication and education
  • Running outpatient ER cases

Filling of prescriptions, knowledge of common medications
