Lead Technicians are expected to meet all competencies and responsibilities of a Senior Veterinary Technician, including advanced anesthesia, surgery, hospitalization, and emergency patient care, while also providing day-to-day leadership to the clinical team. Additional responsibilities include staff training and accountability, workflow oversight, inventory and supply management, and helping ensure hospital protocols are consistently followed. Key Responsibilities Team Leadership Provide day-to-day leadership to veterinary technicians and assistants Help organize clinical workflow and staff assignments Train and mentor new and existing team members Reinforce job responsibilities, hospital protocols, and standards Identify workflow or performance concerns and communicate them to management Lead by example in professionalism, communication, efficiency, and patient care Clinical & Workflow Oversight Help maintain efficient exam room and treatment-area workflow Ensure treatments and diagnostics ordered by veterinarians are completed appropriately Help ensure medical documentation, charges, and patient care tasks are completed Assist the team during high-volume periods Recognize when a patient or situation needs to be escalated to a Senior Technician or veterinarian Training & Accountability Assist with onboarding and training new clinical team members Evaluate competency and identify areas requiring additional training Reinforce established SOPs and Trainual protocols Provide professional, constructive feedback Help create a positive, accountable, and team-oriented work environment Inventory & Supply Management Oversee medical inventory, medications, supplies, and treatment-area stock. Monitor inventory levels and ensure essential medications and supplies remain adequately stocked. Place and/or coordinate medication and supply orders according to hospital procedures and approved budgets. Maintain appropriate par levels and help prevent both stockouts and unnecessary overstocking. Monitor expiration dates and inventory rotation. Help identify inventory discrepancies, waste, excessive usage, or pricing concerns. Ensure medications and supplies are received, stored, and organized appropriately. Coordinate with the Practice Manager regarding significant purchases, inventory issues, and vendor concerns. Help maintain and manage the hospital's online pharmacy workflow as assigned. Train technicians and assistants on proper inventory usage, organization, and accountability. Qualifications Veterinary technician experience required Previous leadership, lead technician, or training experience strongly preferred Strong communication and organizational skills Ability to coach and provide constructive feedback Comfortable working in a fast-paced veterinary hospital Strong attention to detail and follow-through Ability to lead while remaining an active member of the clinical team LVT/CVT preferred but not required
