Independence Veterinary Neurology is a new, independently owned specialty practice built around a simple philosophy: pets and people come first. Led by a board-certified veterinary neurologist, IVN will provide advanced diagnostics, medical neurology, and neurosurgical care while intentionally creating a workplace where talented veterinary professionals can thrive. We're looking for a Licensed Veterinary Technician who wants to practice excellent medicine, fully utilize their training and technical skills, continue growing professionally, and help build an exceptional team from the ground up. Our goal is a culture that is supportive, safe, collaborative, efficient, and kind—where people communicate openly, help one another succeed, and feel supported enough to learn and grow. You May Be a Great Fit If You... Want your coworkers to succeed and naturally step in when someone needs help—even when the task isn't technically "yours." Communicate directly, respectfully, and professionally, and prefer collaboration over competition or workplace drama. Enjoy sharing knowledge, learning from others, and giving or receiving constructive feedback respectfully. Treat patients, clients, and coworkers with patience and kindness, even on difficult days. Want to work somewhere your education, license, judgment, and technical abilities are genuinely utilized. Are excited to help shape a new specialty practice and can remain flexible while the hospital establishes its long-term workflow. This probably isn't the right environment for someone who prefers rigid job boundaries, views helping another department as "not my job," or values individual recognition more than team success. What You'll Do As one of IVN's first LVTs, you'll be an integral part of advanced neurological patient care and will be encouraged to work at the level your education, experience, skills, and legal scope of practice allow.
Highlights include:
Providing advanced nursing care to medical, surgical, hospitalized, and ICU neurological patients. Performing and assisting with advanced diagnostic imaging, including MRI. Preparing for, assisting with, and monitoring neurological and neurosurgical procedures. Assisting with electrodiagnostics such as EMG and nerve conduction studies. Providing skilled anesthesia care from preparation and induction through monitoring, recovery, and pain management. Performing advanced technical and nursing procedures within the LVT's legal scope of practice based on demonstrated competency and experience. Accurately calculating medications, CRIs, dilutions, concentrations, and percentages. Properly handling, administering, documenting, and maintaining accountability for controlled medications. Providing compassionate client education, communication, and discharge support. Supporting and sharing knowledge with veterinary assistants and fellow team members. Cross-training in other areas of the hospital, including reception/customer-service support when needed. A comprehensive job description and complete duty list will be reviewed during the interview process. Cross-Training Is Part of the Culture We'll be opening with a small team, so there may be times when an LVT answers a phone, checks in a client, restocks supplies, cleans a treatment area, or briefly steps into another role because that's what the team needs. Likewise, you should be able to expect your coworkers to step in for you. No role is unimportant, and helping your team is never beneath your title. Cross-training does not mean underutilizing licensed staff.
Our goal is the opposite:
everyone should work to the highest level of their abilities while remaining willing to support the people beside them. Required Qualifications High school diploma or GED. A.A.S. or bachelor's degree in Veterinary Technology. Current, active Virginia Veterinary Technician license (LVT), or ability to obtain VA licensure. Reliable transportation. Strong medical-math, communication, critical-thinking, organization, and teamwork skills. Ability to perform the physical and technical duties associated with veterinary patient care. Preferred — But Not Required Additional consideration may be given for: 1-3+ years of LVT experience. Specialty, emergency, or veterinary neurology experience. Advanced anesthesia or critical-care experience. VTS certification, particularly in a specialty relevant to neurology or advanced patient care. Experience mentoring or training veterinary team members. If you're an experienced LVT who doesn't check every box above, we would still like to hear from you. Schedule This is a full-time position of approximately 30-40 hours per week.
Anticipated hospital hours:
Monday-Friday | 8:00 AM-5:00 PM Our anticipated goal is to establish a schedule that may allow LVTs to work primarily four days per week. During the opening and early growth of the practice, some five-day workweeks may be necessary, so flexibility will be important initially. IVN is currently targeting a late November to early December opening, with approximately two weeks of employee orientation and training anticipated beforehand. Because the facility is currently being renovated, these dates remain approximate.
Compensation Expected starting range:
$26-$38/hour Compensation will be based on experience, education, specialty/neurology background, advanced credentials, technical skill level, and relevant leadership or mentoring experience. The lower portion of the range is intended for newly licensed or early-career LVTs who may initially require additional training and mentorship. The upper portion reflects candidates bringing substantial experience, advanced technical skills, specialty expertise, or additional credentials. Highly experienced or exceptionally qualified LVTs are encouraged to apply even if their compensation expectations fall outside the posted range. Final benefit offerings and eligibility requirements will be reviewed with candidates before hire. Why Independence Veterinary Neurology? Being independently owned gives us the opportunity to intentionally build the kind of practice we believe patients, clients, and veterinary professionals deserve. For our patients, that means advanced technology, individualized medicine, and decisions driven by what is best for the patient. For our team, it means trusting talented people to use their skills, teaching rather than intimidating, sharing knowledge instead of guarding it, and helping the person beside you rather than watching them struggle. We believe highly trained veterinary professionals do their best work when they are respected, supported, challenged, and given room to grow. The Freedom to Care. The Expertise to Heal. If that sounds like the kind of veterinary medicine—and the kind of team—you've been looking for, we'd love to hear from you.
