Examples of Duties
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Direct various food service program activities including menu pricing, food production, distribution and serving, departmental accounting, fiscal accounting and management reporting. food purchasing, storekeeping and delivery. Develop goals and objectives of the Child Nutrition Department, sections and units supervised. Monitor District-wide food services policies, programs and practices to assure conformance with modern institutional food service management theory and practice, and State and Federal legal requirements. Direct and supervise the administration of the National School Lunch and Breakfast and Snack Program; direct the assignment of benefits for subsidized meals, the submission of reimbursement claims and required reports; assure that compliance standards are maintained. Develop and implement Department-wide safety programs and practices to ensure a safe work environment, highly safety conscious/educated employees and conformance with applicable local, State and Federal regulations. Direct and supervise menu planning and food production, distribution and serving to assure food quality and sanitation, nutritional value and attractiveness to each age group served. Direct Department-wide food and supply procurement and stores practices; purchase supplies, services, equipment and other related items according to District procedures; assure State and Federal requirements are maintained. Direct and monitor financial management and accounting systems and services to assure accurate records are maintained; assure timely and accurate financial reporting and internal controls; review financial and participation reports. Assure dissemination of information and promotes effective departmental communications. Evaluate services requests and determine departmental ability to provide service and time lines for performance. Communicate with department and school administrators to assure satisfaction with services, assess service needs and coordinate departmental activities. Train and evaluate the performance of assigned staff; interview and select employees and recommend transfers, reassignment, termination and disciplinary actions. Process formal and informal grievances and communicate with employees on matters related to performance and employee status; assist lower level managerial and supervisory staff in supervisory practices and serve as reviewer of evaluations. Develop work procedures and practices of the Department and modify work assignments of staff in accordance with the needs of the Department. Prepare oral and written directives; interpret, enforce and apply policies and regulatory requirements controlling the work of the Department. Maintain records of payroll-related information of the Department, assuring the proper reporting of time worked and absences; recommend Board policy and interpret policy in the development of procedures for the Department. Formulate and administer division budget. Conduct a variety of technical and administrative studies, preparing reports of findings and recommendations. Prepare Departmental agenda materials and staff reports for Board, council and committee meetings and attend Board meetings, upon request, to present reports and provide professional advice. Serve as a member of the District management team and serve as acting division manager as assigned; chair and participate in technical and professional meetings, represent the District and make presentations. Prepare scope of work statements and requests for proposal and confer with appropriate management on recommendations for award.
OTHER DUTIES
Direct, monitor and inspect work of contractors for workmanship and conformance with contractual agreements. Perform related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
KNOWLEDGE OF:
Advanced principles, methods and practices of institutional food management, school food service programs, accounting and procurement. Principles and practices of management, public administration, safety, supervision, training and public relations. Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary. Advanced methods of report preparation and presentation. Administrative research techniques, sources and availability of information. Contract negotiations and administration. Applicable federal, state and local laws and regulations related to the school feeding programs and safety and sanitation in an institutional food preparation and serving environment. Principles and practices of supervision and training.
ABILITY TO
Plan, organize and direct the diverse and complex food service, accounting, procurement and reporting programs of the department. Perform advanced professional-level work in institutional food management. Supervise and direct managerial, supervisory, professional, technical and support personnel. Delegate authority and responsibility. Conduct thorough investigations. Schedule and program work on a long- and short-term basis. Train, supervise and evaluate personnel. Devise and operate effective internal control procedures. Analyze a variety of complex technical and administrative problems and make sound policy and procedural recommendations. Communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing. Prepare, review and approve comprehensive analyses and reports. Formulate and administer policies and budgets. Interpret and make sound decisions in accordance with laws, regulations and policies. Read, understand and apply complex materials. Establish comprehensive record keeping systems. Administer contract services. Operate a vehicle observing legal and defensive driving practices. Understand and follow oral and written instructions. Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others. Be flexible to perform work within changing priorities and possess sufficient interpersonal skill to work harmoniously with staff, students, administrators, parents and others. Minimum Qualifications
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Any combination equivalent to: bachelor's degree in nutrition, business, public administration or related field and five years of managerial-level experience in institutional food service.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Valid California driver's license. Incumbent will be involved in field work which requires travel in personal vehicle to various sites.

Positions in this job classification are exempt and work 12 month/year. The duration of the eligibility list is 6 months unless extended by the Executive Director of Classified Human Resources and the Personnel Commission. Applicants selected for permanent or substitute assignments are required to pay for fingerprinting services and obtain Tuberculosis results prior to beginning work. Dental coverage is mandatory for all employees working 20 hours per week, or more, regardless of outside coverage. Less than half-time employees may participate on a voluntary basis.
