Permanent Employment Benefits Help for . Under general direction, provides professional verbatim reporting and transcribing for court proceedings, hearings, and conferences.

Positions in this classification report and transcribe court proceedings, hearings, and conferences and incumbents must possess certification as a shorthand reporter.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Provides, at own expense, all necessary equipment and materials to produce a verbatim record of court and related proceedings.

Reports proceedings of court trials, hearings, and conferences using written, machine, oral stenography, or other authorized method.

Identifies participants by name to facilitate reporting; reads aloud statements of participants as requested during proceedings.

Maintains an official record of court proceedings.

Transcribes proceedings into accurate transcripts upon request; reviews transcriptions for technical accuracy.

Replies to correspondence related to transcripts of proceedings.

Maintains files and records of notes and exhibits.

Archives court reports and transcripts, ensuring security and confidentiality.

Performs related clerical or other duties as needed or assigned.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

Knowledge of court reporting practices and procedures; knowledge of court procedures and protocol; knowledge of the English language; knowledge of legal, medical and other specialized and technical terminology; knowledge of grammar, punctuation, and spelling.

Ability to plan, organize, and perform work responsibilities in a timely and accurate manner; ability to work effectively with judges, court staff, attorneys, and the public; ability to comprehend and properly record varying dialects, accents, and speech peculiarities.

Skill in oral communication and interpersonal relations.

Physical Requirements and Work Setting:

Works in a well-lighted, air-conditioned environment; prolonged periods of sitting and occasional walking, standing, bending, and reaching; lifting reporting equipment and other items up to 25 lbs; fine hand coordination with continuous high frequency repetitive motion; visual acuity, hearing ability, and manual dexterity required; works under difficult and stressful conditions with frequent deadlines and the expectation to produce high quality work under time constraints. Education and/or

Experience Required:

Graduation from an accredited school of reporting or the equivalent. One year of experience as a Court Reporter is desirable.

Certificates and Licenses:

Certified Shorthand Reporter (CSR) by the Texas Supreme Court.
