The duties of this position require a Florida law enforcement officer certification and the regular bearing of firearms. The primary duties include but are not limited to supervising personnel, reviewing and approving offense and arrests reports, and resolving complaints within their section. Additionally, they must interpret state law and county ordinances. Sergeants are also responsible for assisting local, state and federal law enforcement and other governmental agencies, as well as collaborating with other divisions within the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office.

• Manages assigned Sheriff's Office staff to include the prioritization and assignment of tasks and the evaluation of work performances.
• Identifies long/short term challenges specific to District, develops and implements action plan, tracks progress and follows up as needed.
• Maintains a uniform, consistent intelligence sharing process to ensure all shifts have current data to meet district goals.
• Attends City Staff Meetings or Council Meetings in the absence of District Commander.
• Participates in Crime Prevention and Community Policing meetings.
• Coordinates and plans for special events occurring within districts.
• Monitors and adjusts equipment, specialized skill sets and training to ensure equal capabilities among shifts.
• Identifies District training deficiencies and provides or schedules necessary training.
• Assists with auditing video test procedure compliance.
• Monitors District case management to ensure timely completing of District reports.
• Assists with plans and projects as directed by District Captain.
• Reviews and recommends changes to policies applicable to patrol procedures and operations.
• Assist with emergent needs as District Alternate Supervisor at the discretion of the District Captain.
• Attends meetings, training sessions, and seminars as required to remain proficient and knowledgeable in the performance of duties.
• Performs additional duties as directed by the District Commander.

Per General Order 15.01, candidates must: Full time Investigator or Corporal with at least five years of sworn, civilian law enforcement experience, of which the last three must have been with the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office, and at least one of the following: Have served as an Investigator with the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office for a minimum of one year and have not been removed from the position for cause or adverse reason within the year preceding the test, or ; Have served as a Corporal with the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office for a minimum of three years and have not been removed from the position for cause or adverse reasons within the year preceding the test, or ; Have been awarded "Senior Deputy Sheriff" status under the Career Development Program. Senior Deputy Sheriffs are exempt from the requirement of having been an Investigator or Corporal. A bachelor's degree may be substituted for one year's law enforcement experience. Candidates must also meet the good standing criteria outlined in OCSO General Order 11.03 and must have completed at least 100 full-duty days in the 12 months prior to the application deadline unless a waiver is granted by the Sheriff or Designee. (Verbal and written counseling are not considered disciplinary violations.) Any Member desiring to promote must have successfully completed the Field Training and Evaluation Program (FTEP). The Sheriff/Undersheriff may waive certain eligibility requirements upon recommendation from all levels of the candidate's supervisory chain. Waiver requests must be submitted in a memo and processed through the chain of command. Do not submit the Notice of Intent to Test until any required waivers have been approved.

Physical Standards to Perform Job Functions Must be physically able to safely operate a motor vehicle. Must be able to operate radio equipment, computer, copier, fax and telephone. Must be able to meet the physical standard requirements as outlined within the agency's Wellness Policy (Physical Abilities Testing). Peripheral vision or side vision, the ability to see objects and movement outside of the direct line of vision and may be needed to stop any potential conflicts that may occur. Must be able to bend body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist, requiring full use of lower extremities and back muscles. Must be able to bend legs at knees to come to rest on knee(s).
