Job Description

The duties of this position require a constitutional law enforcement officer, requiring the regular bearing of firearms. The primary duties include but are not limited to field training, supervisory responsibilities, reviewing and approving reports and arrests, and complaint resolution. Make interpretations of state law and county ordinances. The successful incumbent must assist local, state and federal law enforcement agencies, and other divisions of the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office.
  • Patrols Okaloosa County to preserve the peace;
  • Prevents and discovers criminal acts;
  • Enforces all the laws of the State of Florida and applicable Federal regulations;
  • Conducts preliminary investigations, including but not limited to, protecting and collecting evidence, interviewing complainants, witnesses and suspects involved in crimes;
  • Prepares a variety of written reports concerning involvement in the duties assigned;
  • Prepares criminal complaints to initiate the arrest of violators;
  • Involved in traffic control and in certain instances the investigation of motor vehicle crashes;
  • Field supervision and incident management: operational leadership and mentoring;
  • Manage shift Field Training Officers (daily observation reports and evaluations);
  • Transition and evaluate new employees assigned out of FTO;
  • Assist with case management and approval of arrest probable cause;
  • Consult on employee evaluations;
  • Issue corrective actions of counselling and reprimand;
  • Coordinate proactive shift level problem-solving implementation;
  • Performs related duties as necessary.
Per General Order 15.01, candidates must: Full time Deputy Sheriff with at least three years sworn experience with the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office at the time of the test. An associate's degree (or higher) may be substituted for one (1) year of experience. At least two (2) years as a full time Deputy Sheriff with the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office in uniformed service. Candidates must also meet the good standing criteria outlined in OCSO General Order 11.03 and must have completed at least 100 full-duty days in the 12 months prior to the application deadline unless a waiver is granted by the Sheriff or Designee. (Verbal and written counseling are not considered disciplinary violations.) Any Member desiring to promote must have successfully completed the Field Training and Evaluation Program (FTEP). The Sheriff/Undersheriff may waive certain eligibility requirements upon recommendation from all levels of the candidate's supervisory chain. Waiver requests must be submitted in a memo and processed through the chain of command. Do not submit the Notice of Intent to Test until any required waivers have been approved.

  • Knowledge of First aid principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of The United States and Florida Constitutions, Federal, State and County criminal and traffic laws and ordinances, related court decisions, department policies, General Orders and Operations Orders.
  • Ability to remain in a standing or sitting position for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to comprehend and make references from material written in the English language and learn job-related material through observation, structured lecture, and oral instruction.
  • Ability to recognize and control sources of personal stress in order to perform class requirements.
  • Ability to apply first aid principles and practices.
  • Ability to work in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to the elements.
  • Ability to work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.
  • Ability to exercise judgment and make decisions as to appropriate action under pressure in accordance with rules, regulations and policies.

  • Ability to use and properly care for firearms and related law enforcement emergency equipment.
Physical Standards to Perform Job Functions Must be physically able to safely operate a motor vehicle. Must be able to maintain a constant state of awareness and act in a safe manor. Must be able to operate radio equipment, computer, copier, fax and telephone. Must be able to meet the physical standard requirements as outlined within the agency's Wellness Policy (Physical Abilities Testing). Peripheral vision or side vision, the ability to see objects and movement outside of the direct line of vision and may be needed to stop any potential conflicts that may occur.
