The Senior Campus Safety Officer is a competitive Civil Service position and is responsible for performing peace officer duties and security tasks pertaining to the safety and protection of individuals and the security of College property, including, but not limited to: property access control, fire and crime prevention and investigation, documentation and reporting of all incidents. An employee in this class patrols buildings and grounds to observe, detect, report, and investigate incidents of theft, vandalism, illegal entry or other unlawful/unauthorized activities and security hazards and to deter equipment failure and maintenance problems. Incumbents enforce the Laws of the State of New York by virtue of the designation of Peace Officer and as such have authority under NYS Law to arrest and detain individuals, as necessary. Direct supervision may be exercised over Campus Safety Officers and/or other subordinate staff. The work is performed under the direct supervision of the Director of Public Safety and/or the Assistant Director of Public Safety. Does related work as required.

Implements and maintains established security plans, policies, and procedures for the provision of a safe, secure environment and the protection of persons and property; Identifies problem areas and suggests changes in lighting, shrubbery, or concealed areas; Responds to calls for service such as reports of criminal activity, personal injuries, missing persons, or stranded motorists by rendering appropriate service; Responds to on-campus medical emergencies and provides first aid/CPR as needed; Patrols buildings, grounds, and parking areas on foot or in a patrol vehicle to maintain order, protect persons and property, and to prevent trespassing, theft, or damage; Identifies equipment failure and potential hazards which may develop; Reports on and takes corrective action necessary to rectify any operational deficiencies or defects; Warns violators of rule infractions such as loitering and expels if necessary; Closes or locks doors, gates, and windows according to prescribed routines to deter criminal activity or accidental loss; Ensures that all doors and entrances are unlocked for daily activities and classes; Enforces College parking rules and regulations; Controls and directs traffic on campus or campus-related roads, grounds, and parking areas; Issues uniform traffic citations and parking violation tickets; Investigates motor vehicle accidents that occur on campus or campus-related property; Acts as liaison between the College and law enforcement and fire fighting agencies to establish and maintain an effective system of crime and fire prevention and to ensure accurate and expedient reporting systems; Investigates, documents, and makes follow up reports and recommendations of all reported or assigned incidents; Testifies in court regarding offenses such as traffic infractions; Works with groups and employees on educational programs such as self-protection, escort services, and the prevention of crime on campus; Oversees the work of Campus Safety Officers and/or other subordinate staff; Transfers cash and other property to College sites and off-campus locations; and Other related duties and responsibilities as may be assigned. Strong written and interpersonal communication skills; Knowledge of the geography and layout of college facilities and surrounding areas; Knowledge of the necessary practices and procedures for maintaining order and ensuring the protection and security of buildings, grounds, and equipment; Knowledge of safety precautions necessary to prevent or minimize fires, accidents, and safety hazards; Working knowledge of law enforcement procedures, basic investigative and documentation techniques, relevant laws, codes, regulations, and legal procedures pertaining to campus security and public safety; Working knowledge of and the ability to perform CPR and utilize an AED; Ability to understand and carry out complex oral and written directions. Ability to hear normal speech and other audible events and to verbally communicate over a two-way radio; Ability to sit and stand for long periods of time; Ability to work indoors and outdoors; Ability to exercise sound judgment and maintain confidentiality; Computer literacy; Willingness to work any and all shifts; and Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position. Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma, and (a) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with an associate's degree in criminal justice, police science, or a closely related field and one year of full time or equivalent part time paid experience as a police officer, peace officer, campus safety officer, or security officer in a public or private security force; or (b) Three years of experience as defined in (a) above; or (c) An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by (a) and (b) above.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

(S) Must possess current NYS Security Guard Certification at time of appointment and maintain such certification until such time as an approved Municipal Police Training Council Training Program for Peace Officers as described in Section 2.30 of the NYS Criminal Procedure Law has been successfully completed; Must successfully complete an approved Municipal Police Training Council Training Program for Peace Officers as described in Section 2.30 of the NYS Criminal Procedure Law within one year of the date of appointment and maintain such certification as a condition of employment; Must possess a valid, appropriate New York State driver license at time of appointment and maintain such license as a condition of employment; and Must possess current CPR/AED certifications or the ability to obtain such certifications within 6 months of appointment and maintain such certification as a condition of employment.
