GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
Under the direction of the Police Chief or designee, police officers are responsible for performing a variety of duties related to the protection of life and property, enforcement of criminal and traffic laws, prevention of crime, preservation of the public peace, apprehension of criminals, and calls for service. They will perform these duties as prescribed in the Department orders, standard operating procedures, directives, and as directed by their supervisor.
Essential Job Functions:
1. Respond to calls for service 2. Enforce all Texas Traffic Laws on streets and highways inside the city limits 3. Investigate motor vehicle crashes 4. Present a visible police presence by patrolling city streets 5. Serve as Bailiff for Municipal Court sessions when scheduled 6. Mandatory and timely appearance on scheduled workdays 7. Prepare and keep a daily log of police actions and any unusual encounters with the public. 8. Submit call records and reports at the end of each shift. 9. Keep the Chief or designee informed of activities during her/his hours of duty. 10. Enforce all City Ordinances state laws and applicable federal laws. 11. Assist other officers as needed/required. 12. Obey and conform to the City of Bertram Policy Manual. 13. Obey all orders, directives, policies issued by the Chief of Police. 14. Assist other officers as needed/required
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
1. Complete State Required National Incident Management System courses. 2. Attend a continuing education program to meet requirements for continued certification. 3. Maintain a current Peace Officer certification through
TCOLE. 4.
Possess a valid Texas Driver's License and clean driving record 5. Have NO record of drug abuse or drug convictions 6. Have NO record of conviction of family violence or assault 7. Be in compliance with City Ordinances, City and Police Personnel Policies 8. Maintain firearm proficiency 9. Work must be organized and scheduled to meet established deadlines 10. Schedule of planned workload activities will be available for supervisor's review upon request 11. Must be able to lead by example 12. Offer mature suggestions to persons looking for help and guidance in addressing perceived legal transgressions against them. 13. Must remain current on state guidelines and resources available to help victims of crime 14. Assume control of emergency situations while providing guidance to other personnel as needed 15. Ability to field questions from visitors, answer phones and find information sources. 16. Must be able to deal with stressful situations while maintaining composure 17. Provide complete and clear information to fellow workers 18. Be able to organize thoughts and communicate clearly both over the phone and in person with others. 19. Telephone etiquette standards will be maintained 20. Must be able to interpret ordinances and laws affecting citizens. 21. Must be knowledgeable of e-mail and web site usage 22. Must be able to network with other area police departments and special police task force personnel 23. Present a positive image of the office and the city 24. Must present a neat, clean appearance 25. When on duty, wear approved uniform with badge and rank visible 26. Must be able to work with and present a positive attitude toward the public 27. Maintain good inter/intra office relations 28. Be able to deal with agitated people in a calm and reassuring manner 29. Other duties as assigned
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
1. High School Diploma or GED equivalent 2. Must be able to read and write in English 3. TCOLE license for a Peace Officer 4. Computer experience with word processing, use of internet and search engines 5. Filing and record keeping experience 6. Clearly legible handwriting 7. Fluent with Texas Penal Code, Texas Code of Criminal Procedures, Texas Transportation Code, Family Code, and Texas Alcoholic Beverage Code. 8. Knowledgeable of use of dictionary and other reference materials pertinent to Law Enforcement 9. Prior service experience dealing with the public 10. Preferred bilingual in English and Spanish 11. Experience in use of spreadsheets, i.e. Excel 12. Prior investigative experience is a plus 13. Prior experience completing and filing police reports, working with District Attorney, Municipal, County and District Courts 14. Experience in preparing and maintaining case files on police action or pending action. 15. Additional education or training programs above the high school level 16. Must live with thirty (30) minute travel time from workstation or be able to meet this requirement within six (6) months of employment.
