Job Description

Overview The Legal Aid Society of Nassau County is seeking a full-time dedicated, detail-oriented and Spanish-Speaking Paralegal Assistant to assist our attorneys representing clients facing criminal charges in Nassau County courts. The ideal candidate should possess a strong understanding of criminal law and be fluent in Spanish. This position is essential in supporting attorneys with case preparation, discovery review, legal research and document management. The candidate will have extensive client contact, including jail visits. If you are organized, proactive, and passionate about public defense, we encourage you to apply. All applicants must have a car since the position includes daily courtroom attendance. Duties Assist attorneys in the preparation of legal documents and case files. Conduct legal research using tools such as Westlaw to support ongoing cases. Draft legal correspondence under attorney supervision. Organize and maintain case files, ensuring all documents are accurate and up-to-date. Communicate with clients to gather necessary information and provide updates on case status. Support the litigation process by preparing exhibits and trial materials as needed. Attend court on a daily basis to assist attorneys with clients and translation services. Assist attorneys in the review of discovery, including translations of body cam videos and audio recordings. Assist in managing deadlines for filings and court appearances. Qualifications Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Paralegal Studies or a related field is preferred. Familiarity with criminal law and procedure. Fluency in the Spanish language with ability to engage in individual translation. Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to work collaboratively within a team environment while also being self-motivated.
