Job Description

Kirtland Community College is accepting applications for a qualified part-time instructor to teach
FFT 10800
  • Wildland & Rural Fire Control.
This three-credit course introduces students to wildland and rural fire control problems, methods, and practices, with an emphasis on wildland fire behavior, firefighter training, fire prevention, and suppression. Students examine both the role of wildfire suppression and the natural role of fire in wildland ecosystems.
FFT 10800
incorporates the following National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) courses:
  • S-130
  • Firefighter Training
  • S-190
  • Introduction to Wildland Fire Behavior
  • I-100
  • Introduction to Incident Command System
  • L-180
  • Human Factors in the Wildland Fire Service The course prepares students to meet training requirements associated with entry-level wildland firefighter qualification. The course is offered during the Winter semester and includes classroom instruction and practical application.
  • Communicate effectively with students, college personnel, and outside agencies utilizing both interpersonal and technical methodologies.
  • Prepare for and instruct
FFT 10800
through the use of appropriate learning experiences, instructional materials, practical exercises, and training methods that provide the opportunity to meet overall course objectives.
  • Deliver applicable NWCG course content in accordance with current NWCG curriculum, instructional standards, and instructor qualification requirements.
  • Provide instruction in wildland fire behavior, firefighter safety, basic suppression practices, incident command, human factors, and related wildland and rural fire control topics.
  • Provide and supervise practical training activities while maintaining an appropriate and safe instructional environment.
  • Support student learning by meeting college requirements in assessing student learning.
  • Establish and maintain a professional environment conducive to student learning.
  • Evaluate student progress through practical evaluation, written examinations, assignments, and observation. Provide students with feedback on progress on a timely basis.
  • Maintain appropriate student training and course-completion documentation as required by the college and applicable NWCG standards.
  • Actively support student success through guidance and assisting individual students as needed.
  • Participate in professional activities including, but not limited to, curriculum planning, examination development, course evaluation/revision, and other professional planning activities.
  • Participate in Student End of Course Evaluation process.
  • Submission of grades according to college timelines.
  • Attend meetings as specified by contract.
  • Perform other duties as assigned. Required Qualifications
  • Demonstrated professional experience in wildland fire suppression, wildland fire management, or a closely related fire service field.
  • Meet applicable National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) instructor qualification requirements for the NWCG courses included within
FFT 10800.
  • For S-130 Firefighter Training, qualified as a Single Resource Boss, or otherwise approved in writing by the appropriate Course Coordinator in accordance with NWCG requirements.
  • For S-190 Introduction to Wildland Fire Behavior, qualified as a Single Resource Boss (CRWB, HEQB, ENGB, FELB, FIRB, or HMGB).
  • Possess an appropriate formal instructional credential, such as
NWCG M-410
Facilitative Instructor, a state fire-service instructional credential, college teaching credential, or other qualifying instructional certification.
  • At least 40 hours of successful fire-service instructional experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of wildland firefighter safety, fire behavior, incident command, suppression practices, and applicable wildland fire standards and procedures.
  • Ability to safely conduct and supervise classroom and practical training activities.
  • Computer skills, including the use of the internet, Microsoft Office products, email, and related instructional technology. Preferred Qualifications
  • Current or recent wildland fire operational experience.
  • Experience delivering NWCG courses or other recognized fire-service training.
  • Experience working with state or federal wildland fire agencies.
  • Previous college-level teaching, training, mentoring, or instructional experience.
  • Additional NWCG qualifications, fire-service credentials, or certifications related to wildland and rural fire operations.
