In this role, you will be responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and performing preventative maintenance on a wide range of diesel trucks, scrap handling equipment (including material handlers, wheel loaders, and excavators), and stationary yard processing machinery. The ideal candidate is a strong problem solver with solid hands-on experience in diesel engines, hydraulic systems, auto-electrics, and structural metal repairs.

Key Responsibilities Preventative Maintenance:

Perform routine PM services (fluid changes, filter replacements, chassis greasing, safety inspections) on scrap handlers, loaders, forklifts, semi-trucks, and roll-off trucks.

Diagnostics & Repair:

Troubleshoot and repair complex mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, braking, and pneumatic issues across our mobile and stationary equipment fleet.

Component Overhaul:

Remove, repair, or replace damaged components such as hydraulic cylinders, hoses, pumps, engine parts, radiators, and drivetrains.

Fabrication & Welding:

Perform basic torching, cutting, and stick/MIG welding to repair scrap buckets, grapples, trailer frames, and wear plates.

Emergency Field Repairs:

Perform quick-response, on-site repairs within the yard to minimize equipment downtime during operational hours.

Record Keeping & Safety:

Maintain clean service records, track work orders, manage spare parts inventory, and strictly adhere to all OSHA, DOT, and yard safety standards (including Lockout/Tagout).

Qualifications & Requirements Experience:

Minimum 3+ years of experience as a heavy equipment or diesel truck mechanic (experience with recycling equipment, scrap handlers, or construction machinery preferred).

Technical Skills:

Strong proficiency in hydraulic systems, 12V/24V electrical troubleshooting, diesel engine diagnostics, and air brake systems.

Welding Ability:

Proficient in stick and MIG welding, as well as oxy-fuel cutting.

Tool Set:

Must possess a personal set of standard and metric hand tools appropriate for heavy equipment repair (specialty tools provided).

Certifications:

Valid Driver's License required (Class A or B CDL is a strong plus). ASE or manufacturer certifications (Cat, Cummins, Detroit, Fuchs) are preferred.

Physical Ability:

Able to lift up to 75 lbs, crawl, bend, and work in tight spaces or elevated equipment platforms. Work Environment Combination of working in a sheltered maintenance shop and out in the scrap yard under variable weather conditions. Physical, hands-on role requiring agility, strength, and continuous focus on safety around active equipment.
