Equipment Mechanic - Fleet Maintenance

Job Description

Performs intermediate semiskilled work diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining vehicles and heavy equipment, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Fleet Maintenance Supervisor. Performs preventive maintenance and repair on a variety of vehicles and equipment including automobiles, tractors, heavy construction equipment and landscaping equipment. Performs motor repair and replacement work; performs repair work on both gas and diesel engines. Fabricates replacement parts and metal for repairs to vehicles and equipment. Maintains cleanliness of shop area, tools and equipment and exterior building perimeter. Performs inspections; maintains records of service and repairs. Repairs hydraulic systems on heavy duty equipment. Assists with storm cleanup. Performs other assigned duties. General knowledge of the methods, tools and equipment used in the repair and maintenance of automotive passenger cars, trucks, construction, and maintenance equipment. General knowledge of necessary safety precautions. Skill in the use and operation of tools and machinery used in automotive repair work. Ability to detect by inspection worn or broken parts. Ability to keep records of repairs and service operations and to prepare reports. Ability to adapt available tools and parts to specific repair problems. Ability to follow oral and written instructions accurately. Ability to lift heavy objects. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, supervisors, vendors, and the public. High school diploma or equivalent. Three to five (3-5) years of experience in a related field or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Valid driver's license.
