Community Center Grounds & Maintenance Technician

Job Description

Job Description SUMMARY Under the general supervision of the Community Center Coordinator, this position performs a variety of manual, semi-skilled, and skilled work in the construction, maintenance, groundskeeping, and repair of the community center facilities. Maintains all of the developed parkland in the community center. This position is a part-time position that does not exceed 29 hrs. per week and is not eligible for benefits.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Performs a variety of manual, semi-skilled, and skilled construction, maintenance, and repair work of the Community Center facility. Operates specialized equipment such as power mowers, chain saws, fertilizer spreaders, hedgers, front-end loaders, tractors, and other equipment. Waters, mows, cultivates, prunes, weeds, renovates, and fertilizes grass, plants, trees, flowers, and shrubs. Prepares and maintains athletic fields and related facilities, and other indoor or outdoor recreational facilities. Installs, maintains, and replaces playground equipment and fences; assembles tables, benches, and bleachers. Sprays various fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides, and other related chemicals in tribal parks and recreation areas. May assist in training or leading the work of other participants or volunteers. Installs, maintains, and makes repairs to irrigation lines, valves, sprinklers, and controllers, as well as fixtures such as light switches, motors, wall receptacles, conduits, faucets, drinking fountains, water heaters, urinals, water regulators, and pressure valves. Maintains the Community Center facilities such as restrooms, concession stands, and picnic shelters. Performs and/or directs routine maintenance and cleaning of tools and equipment. Participates in removing, topping, pruning, and trimming trees and uses hand and power saws and other equipment to cut up branches and remove tree trimmings and stumps. Immediately makes repairs from vandalism and graffiti. Follows proper safety procedures and precautions in relation to all work performed. Drives vehicles and operates equipment as required. May be required to work evenings, including weekends and holidays, and take standby duty if assigned. May be subject to call-outs after hours and weekends. Performs other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of basic methods, tools, materials, and equipment used in grounds maintenance work Basic construction and repair methods. Safe work practices. Use the hand and power tools required in general grounds maintenance work. Understand and carry out both oral and written directions. Establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Perform heavy manual labor duties. Learn the proper method of planting, cultivating, and pruning hedges, trees, shrubs, lawns, and flowerbeds. Learn to operate various park maintenance equipment and machinery. Identify possible safety hazards in parks and recreation areas. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. May be expected to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
QUALIFICATIONS
Work indoors or outdoors and may have exposure to adverse weather conditions related to outdoor job duties. First Aid /CPR Certification is required. Must have a valid Arizona Driver's license. Must pass DPS/FBI fingerprint background investigation; must not have 2 misdemeanors or a felony.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
High school diploma, or trade school, technical college, or equivalent. 3 years of work experience in the related field.
