Job Description

Job Summary Join our dynamic maintenance team as a School Bus Mechanic, where you will play a vital role in ensuring the safety, reliability, and efficiency of our fleet of school buses. This energetic position involves diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining a variety of vehicle systems to keep our buses running smoothly and safely. Your expertise will directly contribute to providing safe transportation for students and supporting our county's educational efforts. Responsibilities Perform comprehensive inspections and diagnostics on school buses, including engine, transmission, suspension, brakes, hydraulics, electrical systems, HVAC, and other mechanical components. Conduct repairs and maintenance using hand tools, power tools, welding equipment, and specialized automotive diagnostic tools to ensure vehicles meet safety standards. Utilize schematics and technical manuals to troubleshoot complex mechanical and electrical issues efficiently. Repair or replace heavy equipment components such as shocks & struts, air brakes, wheel alignments, tires, and hydraulic systems. Perform fabrication tasks as needed for custom repairs or modifications on school buses or related equipment. Maintain detailed service records and documentation of all repairs performed to ensure compliance with safety regulations. Assist with vehicle assembly or equipment repair projects to support fleet readiness and longevity. Ensure all work complies with safety protocols and industry standards for heavy equipment mechanics and automotive repair. Experience Proven school district/dealership experience or background in heavy truck repair and automotive diagnostics. Strong mechanical knowledge of diesel engines, transmissions, suspensions, brakes (including air brake systems), hydraulics, HVAC systems, and vehicle electrical systems. Skilled in using schematics for troubleshooting complex mechanical and electrical issues on various vehicle types. Experience with welding, soldering, tire service, alignment procedures, and general equipment maintenance is preferred. Prior work in automotive repair shops specializing in heavy truck or industrial equipment is advantageous. Ability to lift heavy objects safely and operate power tools effectively while maintaining high safety standards. Excellent customer service skills combined with the ability to communicate technical information clearly to team members and stakeholders.
