Job Description

Position Summary A Substation Technician is responsible for the inspection, operation, construction and maintenance of the Cooperative's substations, and electrical line apparatus. Qualifications
  • IBEW Substation Journeyman preferred. Will consider applicants with a minimum of 2 years work experience with high-voltage substations that can successfully pass the IBEW Local 125 Substation Journeyman exam within 2 years of employment.
  • Possession of IBEW card within 30 days of assignment
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Possess and maintain a valid state driver's license. CDL preferred. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Occasionally work long hours during emergency conditions
  • Be responsible for cooperative tools, test equipment, and vehicles.

  • Decision Making Duties and Responsibilities
  • Installs, maintains, and operates transformers, regulators, load tap changers, circuit breakers, circuit switchers, reclosers, relays, capacitors, SCADA communications equipment, battery banks and chargers.
  • Perform testing on substation apparatus such as relay testing & commissioning, transformer turns ratio, megger insulation, battery load testing, oil sampling, and other analytical tests as assigned.
  • Operate substation equipment, including switching and grounding.
  • Inspects electrical facilities for conformance with specifications and safety standards.
  • Perform relay panel wiring.
  • Install substation conduit systems, ground grids, and fencing.
  • Maintains record of spare equipment, materials, and tools designed for substation construction, maintenance, and repair.
  • Work occasionally in elevated work areas, that require bucket and boom trucks
  • Uses safety equipment needed to safely work on or near energized conductors and associated electrical equipment.
  • Performs work in a safe manner in conformance with all applicable regulations.
  • Other duties as assigned and as qualified to perform.
  • Participation in cooperative strategy and initiatives This is a full-time position that will work under the direct leadership of the Substation Foreman, who will report to the System Engineer.
This position requires that the employee be available for work outside the normal daily work period. Travel may be required within the service territory during the business day and infrequently overnight. Occasional out of the area travel is expected to attend various activities such as meetings, training and other events.
