This position involves maintaining, repairing, and servicing a variety of vehicles and heavy equipment used in public works operations. The ideal candidate will have experience with diesel mechanics, vehicle maintenance, and heavy equipment repair, ensuring that all machinery operates efficiently and safely to support community infrastructure projects. This role requires a strong focus on safety, technical expertise, and the ability to troubleshoot complex systems. Duties Perform routine maintenance and repairs on diesel engines, light trucks, heavy trucks, and specialized equipment such as backhoes, front-end loaders, graders, and dump trucks. Diagnose and repair vehicle systems including automotive electrical systems, hydraulic systems, and electronic components. Conduct welding tasks as needed for equipment repairs or modifications. Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities and repairs performed. Inspect vehicles and equipment regularly to identify potential issues before they result in breakdowns. Ensure all work complies with safety standards and Department of Public Works policies. Operate heavy equipment with a valid CDL endorsement when required for testing or troubleshooting purposes. Assist in the installation and modification of vehicle systems to improve performance or safety features. Skills Proven experience as a diesel mechanic or heavy equipment mechanic with knowledge of vehicle systems. Proficiency in repairing diesel engines, hydraulic systems, electronic controls, and automotive electrical systems. Skilled in welding techniques for equipment repair or fabrication tasks. Ability to troubleshoot complex mechanical issues efficiently and accurately. Valid Driver's License issued by the State of Michigan; must possess a current CDL Endorsement with airbrakes. DOT Physical with emphasis on heavy equipment operation is required. Experience working with hydraulic and electronic systems found in automobiles, light trucks, diesel trucks, lawn mowers, dump trucks, backhoes, front-end loaders, and graders. High School Diploma or equivalent required; additional technical training or certifications are a plus. Reliable transportation to ensure timely response to maintenance needs.
