Job Summary Shenandoah County is recruiting to fill the position of Mechanic Technician. The openings are at the Shenandoah County Department of Solid Waste (Landfill). The Mechanic Technician performs intermediate-skilled and semi-skilled mechanical work on various gas and diesel sanitation vehicles and construction equipment; and does related work as required. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Fleet Manager or Operations Manager. Essential Job Functions To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform the essential job functions satisfactorily. The County provides reasonable accommodations to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the primary functions herein described. Performs preventive maintenance inspections. Assists in diagnosing mechanical problems and determining required repair or replacement of parts, and performs repair on trucks, construction equipment, and other automotive equipment as directed. Repairs or replaces tires. Tunes motors using standard testing equipment. Services chain saws, tractors, weed eaters, pumps, and other small equipment. Performs minor body and paint work. Performs stick or wire-feed welding and other related metal fabrication including cutting, grinding, and drilling. Obtains comparative prices for purchase of supplies, services, and parts. Performs diversified electrical work on automotive equipment, such as troubleshooting electrical problems and repairing or replacing defective parts, repairing and adjusting lights, and repairing generators and starters. Performs general waste disposal and grounds maintenance tasks including snow removal. Transports refuse or recyclables to prescribed areas. Operates trucks, tractors, backhoes, and other mechanical equipment in connection with the above tasks. Follows all safety regulations, policies, and practices to ensure a safe workplace. Ability to maintain regular and predictable attendance at work. Performs additional duties to support operational requirements as assigned. Operates hydraulic mechanisms for compressing and dumping refuse or recyclables. Education and Experience Requires a high school diploma or equivalent, and intermediate experience in repairing vehicles, construction equipment, and other power-driven equipment; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Licenses or Certifications Possession of a driver's license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

General knowledge of the methods, tools, and equipment used in the repair of construction and maintenance equipment. General knowledge and skill in the use and operation of shop tools and machinery. Ability to diagnose the more common defects in vehicles, construction equipment, and small equipment. Ability to detect by inspection any worn or broken automotive parts. Ability to effectively look up parts utilizing written and electronic manuals. Ability to keep records of repairs and service operations and to make reports. Ability to follow oral and written instructions accurately. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public. Ability to maintain regular and predictable attendance at work. The annual starting pay range for this FLSA Non-Exempt position is $44,877.92- $51,609.61 commensurate with qualifications, experience, and internal equity.
