Position Summary The General Maintenance Worker Specialist serves as a part-time, hourly technical authority for vessel repair, overhaul, and hull maintenance operations. Operating in a non-supervisory capacity, this role utilizes master-level multi-craft expertise to analyze technical schematics and coordinate complex repair tasks. The Specialist provides technical guidance to field teams, ensures adherence to rigorous maritime safety standards (OSHA/NAVSEA), and acts as a technical point of contact to optimize shipboard repair workflows. Responsibilities and Duties Analyze work orders, engineering drawings, and shipboard schematics to develop detailed, step-by-step repair sequencing plans. Calculate precise material, tool, and equipment requirements for complex structural, mechanical, and electrical shipboard repairs. Monitor ongoing repair milestones, identify workflow bottlenecks, and implement workflow corrections to maintain ship repair schedules within assigned hourly shifts. Act as the primary technical point of contact between the customer, project managers, and ship repair crew to clarify repair scopes. Execute and guide advanced hot-work operations, including structural steel/aluminum welding, plate fitting, and structural alignment checking. Diagnose, troubleshoot, and plan repairs for complex marine machinery, including pumps, valves, hydraulic systems, and propulsion components. Evaluate hull and tank conditions to determine optimal abrasive blasting profiles and marine-grade protective coating systems. Utilize precision alignment tools and micrometers to ensure structural integrity matches maritime specifications. Monitor compliance with maritime environmental regulations regarding the containment of hazardous materials, paint overspray, and bilge water.
Job Requirements:
High school diploma or equivalent. Minimum of 8-10 years of progressive hands-on experience in ship repair, shipyard operations, or marine engineering environments, with a proven track record of leading complex work packages. Expert ability to read, interpret, and cross-reference complex maritime blueprints and structural drawings. Mechanical experience required in various disciplines found in the ship repair industry. Able to obtain and maintain access to military and government installations and private shipyards. Preferred OSHA 10-Hour Maritime Confined Space Competent Person training. Physical Requirements Ability to safely traverse shipyard environments, climb vertical ladders, enter confined shipboard spaces, and work outdoors in variable marine weather conditions.
