Reports to: Executive Director of Operations and Administrative Services
Terms of Employment:
12 months, full time; Participation in a rotating on-call schedule, including occasional evenings, weekends, and other times outside the regular workday, as operational needs require.

The Transportation Fleet Maintenance Supervisor provides hands-on leadership for the district's transportation maintenance shop and vehicle fleet. The employee plans, prioritizes, assigns, performs, and documents preventive maintenance and repairs; supervises assigned shop personnel; maintains parts, fuel, mileage, and repair records; and helps ensure that school buses and other district vehicles are safe, reliable, compliant, and ready for service. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Executive Director of Operations and Administrative Services and in close coordination with the Director of Student Transportation Services.
Education and Experience:
High school diploma or GED required; additional technical education or recognized automotive/diesel credentials preferred.
Considerable experience in automotive, diesel, heavy-equipment, or school-bus maintenance and repair; supervisory or lead-mechanic experience preferred.
Must possess, or obtain within the timeframe established by the district, a valid Class A commercial driver's license with tanker and school bus endorsements and all other credentials required for assigned duties.
Must meet applicable North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, Department of Motor Vehicles, and district requirements for school-bus maintenance and inspection responsibilities.
Must maintain a driving record and physical ability sufficient to perform the essential functions of the position.
Essential Functions:
Plans, organizes, prioritizes, assigns, and monitors the daily work of the transportation maintenance shop.
Supervises, supports, and evaluates assigned mechanics and shop personnel in accordance with district procedures; identifies training needs and promotes safe, efficient work practices.
Develops and implements procedures and work plans for preventive maintenance, inspections, vehicle service, and repair.
Performs and oversees diagnosis, maintenance, and repair of school buses and other district vehicles, including engines, transmissions, clutches, brakes, steering, suspension, electrical, cooling, fuel, and related systems.
Ensures required preventive maintenance, safety inspections, recalls, and repairs are completed accurately and on schedule in accordance with applicable standards.
Coordinates vehicle availability and repair priorities with the Director of Student Transportation Services so that route coverage and student transportation needs are supported.
Assesses out-of-service vehicles, roadside breakdowns, and urgent repair needs; assigns resources and communicates expected return-to-service times.
Participates in a rotating on-call schedule with other assigned transportation maintenance personnel and responds to after-hours bus breakdowns, mechanical failures, safety concerns, and other fleet emergencies as assigned.
Tests new or repaired equipment and verifies that vehicles are safe and ready to return to service.
Applies district and state standards for vehicle condition, replacement, transfer, and disposal; provides recommendations to the Executive Director of Operations and Administrative Services.
Establishes and maintains an accurate inventory system for parts, tools, tires, fluids, supplies, and shop equipment; monitors usage and recommends purchases.
Obtains quotes, prepares or supports purchase requests, receives parts and supplies, and verifies that purchases and inventory records are accurate and consistent with district procedures.
Enters and maintains equipment repair, labor, parts-order, rebuilt-engine, component, and cost records in the State Vehicle Fleet Management System and other required systems.
Maintains and verifies daily fuel-use, odometer, mileage, vehicle-service, and related fleet records; prepares information needed for state and district reporting.
Maintains documentation required for warranty claims, inspections, preventive maintenance, inventory, vehicle histories, and cost analysis.
Develops and monitors the shop and fleet-maintenance portions of the transportation budget; recommends efficient use of parts, labor, equipment, contracted services, and replacement funds.
Ensures the safe storage, handling, documentation, and disposal of fuels, oils, batteries, tires, pollutants, and other hazardous materials in compliance with applicable requirements.
Maintains a safe, orderly, and secure shop; ensures tools, lifts, diagnostic equipment, and safety equipment are properly used and maintained.
Assists with investigation and documentation of vehicle accidents or mechanical failures when requested.
Provides technical guidance to drivers regarding vehicle defects, pre-trip concerns, and proper reporting of maintenance issues.
Operates a school bus or other district vehicle when properly licensed and assigned during emergencies or operational necessity.
Communicates promptly with the Executive Director of Operations and Administrative Services and the Director of Student Transportation Services regarding vehicle readiness, staffing, safety, compliance, budget, and service disruptions.
Performs other duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Considerable knowledge of automotive and diesel service, preventive maintenance, diagnostic procedures, and repair techniques.
Working knowledge of school-bus inspection, maintenance, safety, environmental, and record-keeping requirements.
Ability to plan, prioritize, supervise, and evaluate the work of others while also performing skilled mechanical work.
Ability to diagnose problems, analyze repair and cost data, and recommend practical solutions.
Ability to maintain accurate electronic and paper records and prepare required reports.
Ability to manage parts, tools, inventory, purchasing, and assigned budget resources responsibly.
Strong organizational, problem-solving, oral communication, and written communication skills.
Ability to work collaboratively with transportation leadership, drivers, school administrators, vendors, and state personnel.
Ability to respond calmly and effectively to breakdowns, emergencies, changing priorities, and operational deadlines.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
The employee must be able to inspect, service, and repair vehicles; use tools and diagnostic equipment; lift and move parts and equipment; bend, stoop, climb, reach, and work beneath or around vehicles; and work in indoor and outdoor conditions that may include heat, cold, noise, fumes, grease, and exposure to hazardous materials. Reasonable accommodations will be considered in accordance with applicable law. The position requires occasional availability outside normal working hours and may require travel to roadside or district locations to diagnose, secure, repair, or coordinate the recovery of disabled vehicles.
