Job Description

JOB FUNCTION
Under general direction of the Street Superintendent, performs skilled and semi-skilled work in the construction, maintenance, and repair of City streets, alleys, rights-of-way, and drainage areas. Operates commercial motor vehicles, heavy equipment, truck-and-trailer combinations, and other Streets equipment, including vehicles and combinations requiring a valid Texas Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL), while also performing general Streets maintenance and crew duties as operational needs require.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Operates commercial motor vehicles, heavy equipment, truck-and-trailer combinations, and other Streets equipment as assigned, including tandem dump trucks, oil distributor trucks, water combination trucks, street sweepers, sheepsfoot and flat-wheel rollers, and similar equipment used in street construction and maintenance. Transports equipment, aggregate, asphalt, base material, debris, water, construction materials, and other loads to and from work sites. Safely loads, secures, transports, and unloads equipment and materials in accordance with applicable laws, City policies, and established safety practices. Performs required pre-trip, post-trip, and routine inspections of assigned vehicles and equipment and promptly reports mechanical, maintenance, or safety concerns. Performs skilled and semi-skilled work in the construction, maintenance, and repair of City streets, alleys, rights-of-way, drainage areas, and related infrastructure. Patches potholes, utility cuts, damaged pavement, and other street surfaces resulting from deterioration, water or sewer work, or other causes. Assists with roadway construction, resurfacing, grading, base preparation, asphalt work, and other street maintenance and repair activities. Repairs, replaces, installs, and maintains street signs, posts, hardware, and related traffic-control equipment. Places and removes barricades, signs, cones, and other traffic-control devices for construction, maintenance, roadway hazards, and lane or road closures. Directs or assists with traffic control at work sites as needed. Cleans and maintains drainage areas, ditches, rights-of-way, streets, and other assigned areas, including removal of debris, vegetation, and obstructions. Mows, weed-eats, trims vegetation, and performs tree and limb removal as necessary to maintain roadway clearance, drainage, visibility, and public safety. Assists with grounds maintenance, landscaping, cleanup, and other Streets or Public Works activities as operational needs require. Performs routine cleaning, care, and basic maintenance of assigned vehicles, equipment, tools, and work areas. Follows established safety procedures and properly uses required personal protective equipment Responds to emergency, after-hours, severe-weather, and other Streets operations as assigned. Assists other employees, crews, or City departments with operational needs as assigned, when appropriately trained, qualified, and authorized to safely perform the work. Performs other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of basic street construction, roadway maintenance, drainage, and right-of-way maintenance practices. Knowledge of safe commercial vehicle and heavy-equipment operation. Knowledge of traffic-control devices, work-zone safety, and safe roadway work practices. Skill in operating commercial vehicles, trailers, dump trucks, rollers, street sweepers, and other assigned equipment. Ability to perform vehicle and equipment inspections and identify potential safety or maintenance concerns. Ability to safely load, secure, transport, and unload equipment and materials. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions, safety procedures, and City policies. Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors, coworkers, contractors, and members of the public. Ability to work independently and as part of a crew. Ability to perform physically demanding work in outdoor and roadside environments.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS
This position requires frequent standing, walking, bending, climbing, reaching, kneeling, squatting, lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling. The employee must be able to lift and move up to 50 pounds and may be required to work in confined, uneven, or awkward positions. Work is primarily performed outdoors and may involve exposure to extreme temperatures, inclement weather, traffic, dust, dirt, asphalt, fumes, excessive noise, chemicals, mechanical hazards, insects, snakes, and other conditions associated with roadway and construction work. The position requires regular operation of City vehicles and heavy equipment and compliance with required personal protective equipment and safety procedures. The employee may be required to work outside the regular schedule, including nights, weekends, holidays, on-call assignments, emergencies, and severe-weather events.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Employment is contingent upon successful completion of required pre-employment screening, including a background check and any other screening applicable to the position. Employees must maintain a valid driver's license appropriate to the position, a driving record acceptable to the City, and all other required licenses or qualifications throughout employment.

Qualifications:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
High School Diploma or equivalent. At least one year of experience in general labor, maintenance, construction, road work, equipment operation, or a related field. Valid Texas Class A Commercial Driver s License (CDL) and driving record acceptable to the City. Must maintain the required Class A CDL and remain eligible to operate assigned City commercial motor vehicles. Must maintain all federal, state, and City qualifications required to operate assigned commercial motor vehicles and equipment. Ability to safely operate commercial vehicles, trailers, construction equipment, and maintenance equipment associated with Streets operations. Ability to work outdoors and perform physically demanding work under varying environmental conditions.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Three or more years of experience in street maintenance, road construction, heavy-equipment operation, commercial driving, or a related field. Experience operating truck-and-trailer combinations, tandem dump trucks, oil distributor trucks, street sweepers, rollers, or similar municipal construction equipment. Experience transporting and securing construction equipment and materials. Experience with asphalt, roadway repair, drainage maintenance, traffic control, or right-of-way maintenance. Additional CDL endorsements or equipment certifications applicable to City operations.
