A different kind of work for someone who already knows burners: If you hold a Massachusetts Oil Burner Technician certificate and you have spent the last several years on service calls, no-heat runs, and weekend rotations, this is a different application of the same skill set. Petroleum Management Services, Inc. (PMSI) builds and maintains the fuel systems that keep hospitals, universities, and municipalities running. Emergency generators. Industrial boilers. Day tanks, pump sets, and boiler-room distribution. The same combustion and fuel-supply knowledge you already have, applied to mission-critical institutional systems instead of residential no-heats. We are a veteran-owned, independent company serving commercial, institutional, and public clients across Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island for over 30 years. We are not owned by private equity, and we are not a retail gas station contractor.
Why technicians make this move:
The work is scheduled, not reactive. Institutional projects and compliance inspection programs are planned. You are not living on emergency calls.
You go deeper, not wider. Institutional fuel systems work is a narrow specialty with very few people in it. That scarcity is what makes the career.
Real projects, not just service. Tank installations and removals, boiler-room fuel loops, pump sets, generator fuel systems. You see jobs through from layout to startup.
Electronics is where this industry is going. Tank monitoring, leak detection, controls, and diagnostics. Technicians who own both the mechanical and the electronic side become the ones clients ask for by name. We will train you into it.
We pay for licenses and certifications. Petroleum Equipment Institute (PEI), International Code Council (ICC), hoisting, confined space entry, HAZWOPER, monitoring systems, and for the right technicians a commercial driver's license. On our dime. What you would be doing :
Service, retrofit, and installation of fuel oil supply and return piping, day tanks, duplex pump sets, and boiler-room fuel distribution
Generator fuel system service and installation
Troubleshooting and repair of electronic tank monitoring and leak detection equipment (training provided)
Regulatory compliance inspections of mechanical systems and leak detection equipment
Working on tank installation and removal projects alongside our construction crews
Working directly with facilities directors and plant managers at hospitals, universities, and other institutions What we are looking for:
Several years of commercial or industrial burner, boiler, or fuel systems service experience
Comfortable with fuel oil piping, threading, and mechanical work
Interest in learning the petroleum and regulatory side of the business: codes, compliance, monitoring systems
Clean driving record, valid driver's license, DOT physical, background check and drug screen Also a strong fit if you are coming from:
Commercial boiler service
Industrial or commercial pipefitting with black steel experience
Generator service
Water or wastewater treatment operations We do not expect anyone to walk in knowing petroleum systems.
Nobody else does exactly what we do. We expect good hands and the interest to learn a trade very few people have.
Compensation and Benefits:
Pay based on experience. We work with a mix of private institutional and public clients, and a portion of our work is prevailing wage, which meaningfully increases earnings on those jobs
Comprehensive health benefits including dental
401(k) with profit sharing component
Annual bonus based on company and individual performance
Paid vacation and 9 paid holidays
All tools provided by PMSI
Paid licensing and certification in the credentials that matter
A four-tier technician career path with defined certifications at each stage, up through project foreman with potential to grow into office-based estimator / project manager About the company: PMSI provides installation, repair and removal, regulatory compliance inspections, and environmental services to major hospital systems, commercial real estate owners, schools, and municipalities.
Our wholly owned subsidiary, Bullfrog Environmental Solutions, is a licensed hazardous waste transporter, which lets us handle petroleum and hazardous waste transportation and disposal in house. Clients come to us for technical expertise and longstanding reputation as the area's leading fueling system contractor for emergency generators, industrial boilers, and fleet dispensers. Institutions depend on their on-site fuel systems for standby power, heat, and critical vehicle operations, and that infrastructure is aging. If you are good at this work and want to go deeper into a specialty with real barriers to entry, we would like to talk.
