Job Description

JOB DESCRIPTION STERILE PROCESSING TECHNICIAN JOB SUMMARY
We are seeking a full-time Sterile Processing Technician. This role is responsible for the cleaning, packaging, sterilizing and storing of supplies. Included in the role of the technician is the overall sterilization of equipment used in the Operating Room. The Technician works as a member of the peri-operative staff ensuring the highest standards of the sterilization are met, which directly affects the outcome of each surgical procedure performed at Wyoming Surgical Center.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Licensure:
The technician must have a high school diploma. Certification is preferred. A current BLS (CPR) card is required within 6 months of hire.
Experience:
One year of previous experience in a central processing department is preferred, but not required.
Job Skills:
1. Adequate understanding operative procedures and the equipment necessary for the procedures. 2. Complete knowledge of the sterilization equipment. 3. Basic computer skills 4. Foundational understanding of aseptic technique, and infection control in the workplace. 5. An awareness of hazardous materials present in the work setting, and actions taken in the event of hazardous spills. 6. And ability to assess safety issue of the environment and maintenance of a safe area for patients and employees.
Physical Demands:
Employee must be in good physical health to perform the duties inherent in the position (long periods of standing, walking, lifting, ect.) Must be able to lift fifty (50) pounds.
Potential Risks:
Exposure to hot temperatures, sharp instruments, blood and body fluids, medication, hazardous chemicals and cleaning chemicals.
JOB RELATIONSHIPS
Is directly responsible to the OR Supervisor.
DUTIES:
1. Prepares supplies, instruments and equipment for sterilization. A. Cleans each item according to manufacturer's instruction. B. Ensures that each item is in good working condition. C. Sorts and arranges items into proper trays according to established policy and procedure. D. Wraps trays and individual items according to established policy and procedure. E. Accurately labels each item with name and load number. 2. Operates autoclaves and other equipment for processing items. A. Position items correctly. B. Selects the proper cycle. C. Checks indicators for proper function. D. Performs biological monitoring techniques required on all sterilizers according to established policy and procedure. E. Changes recording paper on all equipment as needed and store according to policy and procedure. F. Cleans equipment according to established policies and procedures. 3. Maintains adequate inventory of sterile items. A. Places items in their proper place. B. Performs inventory of processing supplies and notifies purchasing agent when to order. 4. Assists in maintaining records of all instruments and equipment. A. Maintains and updates the instrument tray inventory list. 5. Maintains order and cleanliness of the Central Processing/Sterile Corridor Area. A. Keeps area clean and neat. B. Cleans shelves, counter tips and equipment as needed. C. Readies cleaning equipment for surgery day. D. Stocks supplies as needed. E. Helps with room turnover when available. F. Disposes of infectious waste into appropriate containers for pickup
