Job Description

College Internship | Custom Picture Framing & Art Installation Willow Street Pictures — Harleysville, PA Willow Street Pictures is offering a hands-on college internship for a student interested in custom picture framing, fine arts, art and design, craftsmanship, gallery work, or a related creative field. The primary focus of this internship is hands-on custom picture framing and the production of finished artwork. You'll work directly alongside our Custom Picture Framer and Design Specialist at our Harleysville studio, learning how professionally framed artwork is produced from start to finish. You'll also have opportunities to assist with professional artwork installations at business locations and, as the studio schedule allows, gain exposure to client framing and design appointments. This is an active, physical, hands-on internship. It is not a desk position or a traditional retail sales-counter internship. We want the student to learn by participating in the actual work. What You'll Learn & Experience The majority of your internship will take place alongside our Custom Picture Framer and Design Specialist, learning and assisting with the process of turning photographic artwork into a professionally finished piece. Depending on the projects in production, you'll gain experience with areas such as: Mat cutting Fitting artwork Frame assembly Mounting Glazing Backing and wiring Measuring and preparation Handling finished artwork Organizing framing materials and client projects Quality control Preparing completed artwork for pickup or installation You'll also learn to safely use many of the tools and equipment involved in custom framing, including mat cutters, fitting and assembly tools, measuring equipment, and other professional framing tools. Previous picture-framing experience is not required. Training and supervision will be provided as you learn our processes and how to use unfamiliar tools and equipment safely and correctly. Professional Artwork Installation You'll also have opportunities to accompany our Custom Picture Framer and Design Specialist to professional artwork installations at veterinary hospitals, professional offices, and other business environments. You'll assist with areas such as measuring, determining placement, leveling, setup, hanging hardware, drills and tools, installation, and final presentation. This gives you the opportunity to see the complete process—not only how custom artwork is produced in the studio, but how it is ultimately placed and presented in a real environment. Framing Design & Client Experience As the studio schedule allows, you'll also have opportunities to experience the design and client-facing side of custom framing. This may include participating in client Framing Appointments, assisting with frame and matting samples, learning how different framing choices affect the presentation of finished artwork, and learning to use Virtual Framer to help clients visualize different framing possibilities. You'll gain exposure to how considerations such as color, proportion, scale, matting, frame selection, wall space, and the surrounding environment influence the final presentation. The amount of time spent in this area will vary depending on the studio's framing and client schedule. Custom framing production remains the primary focus of the internship. This Is a Physical, Hands-On Internship We want applicants to understand the nature of the position before applying. This internship involves being on your feet, working with your hands, using tools, moving throughout the studio, handling framing materials and finished artwork, and assisting with installations. Interns should be comfortable safely lifting and carrying approximately 30-40 pounds when required. Larger or more difficult pieces are handled with appropriate assistance. If you're looking exclusively for a computer-based creative internship or a position spent primarily behind a desk, this probably won't be the right experience. If you enjoy making things, working with your hands, learning a skilled craft, and seeing a project through from production to finished installation, we'd like to hear from you. Who This Internship May Be a Good Fit For We especially welcome students studying: Fine Arts Art & Design Interior Design Students in related programs are also encouraged to apply, including: Visual Merchandising Museum or Gallery Studies Photography Art Education Theater or Set Design Architecture Woodworking, fabrication, craft, or related hands-on creative programs You do not need to already know how to custom frame artwork. We're looking for someone who is detail-oriented, dependable, visually minded, comfortable learning hands-on skills, and genuinely interested in craftsmanship and finished artwork. Because every piece we produce is individually created for a client, attention to detail and careful handling of artwork and materials are extremely important. College Credit Requirement This internship offered exclusively through an established college or university internship program for academic credit. Applicants must currently be enrolled in a college or university and be eligible to receive academic credit for the internship. Your school must be able to recognize and approve Willow Street Pictures as your internship placement. Willow Street Pictures will work with your college or university's internship coordinator and complete required employer paperwork, evaluations, and other documentation associated with your internship program. Location, Transportation & Schedule The internship is based primarily at our Harleysville, Pennsylvania studio, with occasional work at our West Lawn location and travel to business locations for professional artwork installations. Reliable transportation is required. Depending on the day's schedule, you may travel with our Custom Picture Framer and Design Specialist or drive yourself to an installation location. If driving separately, you'll be responsible for transporting yourself; you will not be expected to transport Willow Street Pictures client artwork in your personal vehicle. Willow Street Pictures operates Tuesday through Saturday . We understand that college schedules and internship requirements vary. We do not require a fixed minimum number of internship hours per week. We'll work with you and your college or university to develop a schedule that accommodates your academic schedule and meets your school's internship requirements. We are currently considering students for Fall 2026, Spring 2027, and Summer 2027 internships. About Willow Street Pictures Willow Street Pictures is a luxury fine-art portrait studio specializing in families, pets, and the relationships people value most. Creating the photograph is only part of what we do. Our clients' portraits become finished custom artwork through professional printing, design, custom framing, and presentation. This internship provides an opportunity to experience a part of the creative process that students don't always see in the classroom: how an image becomes a professionally crafted physical piece of artwork. You'll have the opportunity to learn the craftsmanship, tools, attention to detail, problem-solving, and production processes behind custom framing—and then see some of that artwork through to its final installation. To Apply Please submit your résumé along with a short introduction telling us: What college or university you currently attend and what you're studying Whether your school has an established internship program and you're eligible to receive academic credit How many total internship hours your program requires Whether you're seeking a Fall, Spring, or Summer internship What interests you about custom picture framing and hands-on artwork production Any relevant art, design, framing, woodworking, fabrication, gallery, installation, or other hands-on creative experience you may have Classroom projects, personal projects, and hands-on hobbies absolutely count. We don't expect you to arrive knowing how to custom frame artwork. We're looking for someone who wants to learn, enjoys combining creativity with hands-on work, and would value the opportunity to develop real-world skills alongside our Custom Picture Framer and Design Specialist.
