The Role Liberty Science Center (LSC) is seeking a hands-on, creative, and skilled Exhibit Technician to maintain, troubleshoot, repair, fabricate, and install interactive science exhibits. If you enjoy figuring out why something isn't working, diagnosing the problem, and developing a practical solution, this role offers the opportunity to work across a wide range of electrical, electronic, mechanical, computer hardware/software, carpentry, fabrication, and exhibit systems . The primary focus of this position is the daily care, operation, and maintenance of LSC's exhibitions. The Exhibit Technician will also support the fabrication, installation, modification, maintenance, and dismantling of in-house, traveling, and off-site exhibitions. The ideal candidate is a strong problem-solver who can troubleshoot equipment down to the component level, work comfortably with hand and power tools, read schematics and technical drawings, and communicate effectively with both coworkers and the public. The Exhibit Technician reports to the Senior Manager of Exhibit Services. What You'll Do Perform daily startup, shutdown, inspection, troubleshooting, and maintenance of Liberty Science Center's exhibits. Ensure exhibits are operational, functional, and safe throughout the day while the building is open to the public, including during evening and private events. Respond to requests from exhibit floor staff and volunteers regarding exhibit operation, troubleshooting, and maintenance issues. Diagnose electrical and mechanical problems down to the component level to determine root cause and recommend corrective action. Troubleshoot and repair electrical, electronic, mechanical, and computer hardware/software components used in exhibits. Use oscilloscopes, generators, meters, hand tools, power tools, and other shop equipment to diagnose, test, repair, and maintain exhibit components. Develop, test, implement, evaluate, and track preventive maintenance programs for exhibits. Establish and maintain preventive maintenance schedules, including appropriate care and cleanliness of electronic and mechanical components. Support in-house fabrication and outside contractors with exhibit installation, modification, repair, and dismantling. Maintain exhibit documentation, equipment histories, inventories, and maintenance records. Read and interpret mechanical drawings, electrical schematics, circuit diagrams, product manuals, and maintenance documentation. Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment. Follow safety and risk-management procedures in public areas and work spaces. Perform other duties and responsibilities as needed. Required Qualifications At least 2 years of hands-on experience in one or more relevant technical areas, such as: Electrical or electronics Mechanical repair or maintenance Computer hardware/software diagnostics Fabrication Carpentry Metalworking Lighting Related technical trades College degree, technical/trade school education, or equivalent education and experience. Strong electrical, mechanical, and technical troubleshooting and problem-solving skills. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret electrical schematics, circuit diagrams, mechanical drawings, fabrication/shop drawings, product manuals, and maintenance documentation. Experience using hand tools, power tools, and shop equipment. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities while maintaining quality and attention to detail. Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment and respond quickly to operational issues. Strong organizational skills. Preferred Qualifications Experience maintaining or repairing interactive exhibits, museum exhibits, educational displays, or similar hands-on equipment . Experience with in-house fabrication, exhibit installation, or exhibit modification. Experience with electrical/electronic troubleshooting. Experience with mechanical systems and component-level diagnostics. Experience with carpentry, metalworking, or other fabrication techniques. Experience with model railroads is a plus. Museum or exhibit experience is helpful but not required. Candidates with strong hands-on experience in electrical/electronics, mechanical maintenance, fabrication, carpentry, or related technical trades are encouraged to apply. Schedule This is a full-time, 40-hour-per-week, non-exempt position . Because Liberty Science Center operates seven days a week and hosts evening, private, and special events, employees must be available to work weekends, evenings, holidays, and early mornings as business needs require. Flexibility is an important part of this position. Physical Requirements This is a hands-on position. The Exhibit Technician will be on their feet for a majority of the workday and will regularly use their hands to manipulate tools, equipment, and materials. The position requires the ability to: Work at various heights, including on ladders and lifts. Maneuver through large public crowds and exhibit areas. Work in tight spaces and potentially dusty environments. Perform diagnostics using visual and audio cues. Lift up to 40 lbs. Safely operate or learn to operate various lifts, including scissor, Toucan, and forklift lifts. Training will be provided. Compensation & Benefits The anticipated salary range for this position is $47,000-$53,000 annually . Final compensation will be determined based on skills, education, certifications, and experience.
