Position Overview As a Conventional Manual Machinist, you will be responsible for setting up and operating various manual machine tools to produce precision parts and instruments. You will work with a variety of materials including metals, plastics, and composites, transforming raw materials into finished products that meet exact specifications. This role requires a master craftsperson who understands the art and science of manual machining and can consistently deliver exceptional results. Primary Responsibilities Set up and operate cylindrical grinders, Lathes, mills, jib bores, to produce precision ground surfaces on workpieces Select appropriate grinding wheels based on material specifications and desired finish Perform internal and external cylindrical grinding operations with tolerances to +/- 0.0001" Dress and true grinding wheels to maintain optimal cutting performance Monitor grinding operations to prevent thermal damage and maintain dimensional accuracy Utilize precision measuring instruments to verify part dimensions throughout the grinding process Set up and operate engine lathes and toolroom lathes for turning, facing, boring, and threading operations Select and mount appropriate cutting tools, work-holding devices, and accessories Calculate proper speeds, feeds, and depths of cut for various materials and operations Production & Process Improvement Analyze manufacturing processes and introduce changes that improve throughput, reduce cycle times, and increase overall efficiency. Diagnose equipment problems, dimensional inconsistencies, and finish-quality concerns, involving the appropriate personnel when additional support is needed. Work closely with quality/inspection, tooling, assembly, and sales teams to keep production aligned with customer delivery requirements. Verify Bills of Material, work orders, and related job documentation to ensure all information is correct and complete prior to starting a job. Keep production documentation current, including job travelers, required approvals, signoffs, and first-piece inspection records.
