Lead Macinist Waltham, MA Apply The Lead Machinist is a hands-on technical leadership role responsible for running CNC and manual machining equipment while supporting the day-to-day operation of the shop floor. This person spends the majority of their time at the machines operating, setting up, and programming while also taking ownership of tooling procurement, raw material stock verification, and general shop organization. The Lead Machinist works closely with and reports to the Director of Operations, who determines job routing and machine assignments; the Lead Machinist is responsible for executing that work at a high standard and keeping the floor running smoothly day to day.

Key Responsibilities:

Set up and run CNC and manual machines to produce precision components to print, holding tight tolerances consistent with Bird Precision\'s micro-machining standards. Assist other machinists and operators with machine setups, troubleshooting, and process improvements. Pull, load, and write/edit CNC programs as needed to support production requirements. Monitor and check raw material (bar stock) inventory levels to ensure adequate supply for scheduled work. Conduct a quarterly physical count and reconciliation of bar stock, ensuring inventory is accurately archived so the Director of Operations can issue materials correctly. Identify tooling needs and place orders to keep the shop properly equipped and running without interruption. Maintain a clean, organized, and presentable shop floor in keeping with 5S / good housekeeping practices. Execute the machine assignments and job routing/scheduling determined by the Director of Operations. Provide informal, day-to-day guidance to other machinists on the floor; Support quality standards by inspecting in-process and finished parts and flagging issues promptly. Coordinate routine and preventive maintenance on machines; make minor repairs/adjustments and identify when outside service is needed. Recommend process improvements, fixturing changes, or efficiency gains to the Director of Operations. Order shop consumables. (cutting oil, deburring supplies, tooling) Follow all safety procedures and promote a safe working environment for the team.

Qualifications:

5+ years of hands-on experience operating both CNC and manual machines (Bridgeport, Turret and gang lathes, Swiss-type equipment a plus given Bird Precision\'s small, high-precision parts). Working knowledge of CNC programming, editing, and setup (G-code). Strong blueprint reading and precision measurement/inspection skills (micrometers, calipers, comparators, gauges). Comfort working to tight tolerances on small, delicate components. Basic understanding of inventory/materials tracking and tooling requirements. Reliable, detail-oriented, and able to work both independently and as part of a small team. Good communication skills ? able to relay information clearly between the floor and the Director of Operations. High school diploma or equivalent required; technical/vocational training in machining a plus. Why Join Us?
