Job Description

Job Summary The Senior Manager, Manufacturing Make-or-Buy Strategy & Execution is a key leadership role within Thermo Fisher Scientific's Contract Manufacturing & Value Assurance team. This position develops, implements, and manages the company's global strategy for determining whether products and components should be manufactured internally or sourced externally. You will ensure these decisions are supported by rigorous financial, operational, and strategic analysis. The role combines strategic finance leadership with hands-on manufacturing and operational expertise. You will design standardized decision frameworks, reconstruct and validate site-level profit and loss statements, and translate complex financial information into actionable recommendations that improve value, cost efficiency, and manufacturing network performance. Working closely with the Senior Manager, Operations, who leads strategic workshops and related operational activities, you will serve as a peer and counterpart responsible for the financial and operational rigor behind the strategy. What You'll Do Design, document, and deploy a standardized make-or-buy decision framework across divisions and product lines. Establish and manage governance processes that ensure consistency, transparency, and alignment with corporate operations, supply chain, and technology strategies. Refine methodologies and analytical tools based on lessons learned and evolving business needs. Develop a detailed understanding of plant- and site-level profit and loss statements. Deconstruct and rebuild financial statements affected by inconsistent historical reporting practices. Reclassify and rationalize cost elements, including reallocating overhead to direct costs when appropriate, to create clear, accurate, and comparable financial views across sites. Defend financial restatements and cost reallocations with site Finance teams to establish alignment and credibility. Connect operational decisions involving capacity, headcount, sourcing, and productivity to financial results and site profitability. Develop and apply advanced financial models to identify and prioritize make-or-buy opportunities across sites, technologies, and product portfolios. Evaluate total cost of ownership, capacity, capability, capital investment, risk, quality, and intellectual property implications. Build robust and defensible business cases using net present value, return on investment, and payback analyses. Lead cross-functional project teams involving Divisional Operations, Finance, Supply Chain, Research and Development, Procurement, and Quality. Partner with the Senior Manager, Operations on strategy development, workshops, and executive presentations. Translate analytical findings into clear, actionable recommendations for senior leadership. Maintain consistent communication, documentation, and alignment across central and divisional stakeholders. Oversee and support the implementation of approved make-or-buy initiatives across divisions and sites. Align divisional execution with central governance requirements and strategic objectives. Define and track key performance indicators that measure the impact and value realization of make-or-buy decisions. Conduct post-implementation reviews to capture lessons learned and improve the overall decision process. Build trusted relationships with senior leaders across Operations, Finance, Supply Chain, Research and Development, and Procurement. Serve as the subject matter expert and central point of contact for make-or-buy financial and operational insights. Communicate strategy, progress, and outcomes clearly and persuasively to diverse audiences. Influence decision-making in a global, matrixed organization without direct authority. Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, or a related field. At least eight years of relevant experience in operations strategy, manufacturing finance, strategic sourcing, or supply chain management. Proven experience leading make-or-buy or manufacturing network optimization initiatives. Hands-on experience with profit and loss ownership, cost accounting, and financial modeling in a manufacturing or operations environment. Demonstrated success leading complex, cross-functional projects in large, global, matrixed organizations. Expert understanding of site-level profit and loss structures, cost drivers, and allocation methodologies. Strong analytical and financial modeling skills, with the ability to transform complex or inconsistent data into clear, actionable insights. Deep understanding of manufacturing processes, sourcing strategies, and supply chain cost structures. Proven ability to connect operational decisions to financial implications and strategic outcomes. Excellent communication skills, including the ability to confidently defend analyses and influence stakeholders at multiple organizational levels. Strong project management capabilities and proficiency with standard project management tools. Ability to work independently, navigate ambiguity, and adapt in a dynamic environment. Preferred Qualifications Master of Business Administration or another relevant advanced degree. Familiarity with Lean, Six Sigma, or other continuous improvement methodologies.
